OGE in English in 2020

Time flies inexorably and the OGE of 2020 is approaching every day, which means that it is time to find out as much as possible about what the English exam will be, whether it will become mandatory for graduates of 9th grades, what will be the structure of new KIMs and how significant the changes made by the FIPI will be.

In 2020, graduates who come to first grades in 2010 will take the OGE (Obligatory State Exam). These are just the guys who had to be the first to follow the updated path of knowledge laid by the Federal State Educational Standard (new educational standard of the Russian Federation).

Since the updated programs in most subjects are significantly different from previous versions, the issues that will be submitted to the state certification will also be changed.

Most CME OGEs will affect partial changes. Questions regarding basic concepts in subjects that were present in the old versions of examination cards will also be present in the new ones. This decision is dictated by the need to compare the results demonstrated by graduates of different years, and also will allow us not to “overwhelm” the OGE with those who, for whatever reason, will be preparing for demos and requirements of 2019.

English as a compulsory subject for OGE

For most students, teachers and parents, the most important question in 2020 is whether the CSE in English will make a compulsory exam for ninth graders?

Discussion of this issue has been going on for several years. Proponents of the expansion of the number of mandatory subjects of the OGE argue their opinion with the following facts:

1. Today, English is an essential component of a successful career in many areas;
2. the subject is taught from elementary grades, which means that by 9 a base of basic skills should be formed and there is definitely something to check;
3. children tend to pay less attention to the study of subjects that are not submitted to the exam and, unfortunately, the foreign one falls into this number.

Opponents of the introduction of a mandatory exam in the English language already in 2020 argue that for many students preparing for this exam can be too difficult due to problems such as:

1. lack of teaching staff;
2. low level of language teaching in individual educational institutions;
3. insufficiently deep study of the subject (for most students in non-specialized schools the exam in the form in which it exists today may be too complicated).

Considering that at the moment there is no official information that in all regions of the Russian Federation the 9th grade in 2020 will pass OGE in English, it can be argued that the graduates of the 2019-2020 academic year were lucky, and the number of required subjects will remain the same, as well as the number of disciplines of choice (recall that previously they were threatened to increase from 2 to 4).

Calendar OGE 2020

The final distribution of exam dates for 9th grade graduates will be approved closer to the end of calendar 2019 (usually in the month of November).

You can plan something in advance for the examination period, focusing on the dates of the preliminary calendar of the OGE 2020, which to date has been compiled only for the main period.

The dates of the beginning and completion of the preliminary period of the OGE-2020 and autumn retakes will be close to the calendar of last year.But, it is worth considering that the beginning and end of the session, as a rule, coincide, and the number of examinations for a particular subject in different years can vary significantly.

Exam structure

In 2020, students will have to take the exam for the new KIMs. At the moment, discussions are underway on the project, the text of which can be found on the FIPI website.

Like last year, the foreign language exam will include two parts:

• oral (15 min), during the performance of which the student must demonstrate the ability to perceive oral speech, as well as competently answer the questions posed and express his opinion;
• written (120 min), during which the examiners will have to work with the text, testing for knowledge of the basics of grammar and vocabulary.

In total, the examiners have to complete 35 tasks, which will be divided into 4 sections:

Teachers and students themselves, choosing the English language training assignments at the stage of preparation for the OGE 2020, should take into account such important factors:

• text for listening sounds read by a native speaker;
• the duration of the text from 1.5 to 2 minutes, but for better perception it is repeated twice;
• text for reading consists of 500 words and corresponds to level A2;
• in assignments for listening do not take into account spelling errors and lack of articles;
• the volume of text in the detailed answer to the task No. 13 is approximately 90-120 words.

Grading

Thus, the structure of the new KIM makes it clear that in all graduates at the OGE 2020 in English will have to complete 35 tasks (with a short and detailed answer), for which it will be possible to score a maximum of 68 points (53 for writing and 15 for oral).

Important! In task No. 32, the text, the volume of which is less than 80 words, experts will not evaluate. If the text exceeds 132 words, then only the part that falls into the maximum number of words is subject to evaluation (the expert does not read everything that is written after the 132nd word).

In the oral part of the OGE 2020 in English, an important criterion will be the item “Solving the communicative problem”. If the examiner receives 0 points for this criterion, then the entire third task of the oral part is also evaluated at 0 points.

Translation to assessment

As you can see, the changes in KIMs for OGE in the English language for 2020 are not as significant as it could be expected, and students of 9th grades can safely start preparing, working out both the 2020 demo version and OGE 2019 tickets.

To give marks, the oral and written scores are summarized and translated into marks according to the table recommended by FIPI:

So, for successful passing the exam it is enough to score 29 out of 68 possible points.

At the same time, the recommended threshold for enrolling students in specialized philological classes in 2020 is 55 points.
