For graduates who are to pass the exam in 2020, we have collected the main news on the topic: possible changes and innovations, a list of compulsory subjects, minimum and passing scores, as well as a schedule of preliminary, main and autumn sessions.
Mandatory subjects
Although more than one year has been actively discussing the increase in the number of disciplines that all graduates in the 11th grade must pass, the list of required subjects for the Unified State Examination 2020 will remain the same.
In total, 15 subjects will be taken for the exam, among which 11 graders will be able to choose three disciplines: two compulsory subjects and one to choose from.
Those who want to pass the exam in a foreign language in 2020 will be able to choose from 5 options:
- English;
- French;
- Spanish;
- Deutsch;
- Chinese.
All foreign languages assume the same format for passing the exam in two stages. The exact dates of the oral and written parts can be found in the exam calendar for 2020.
Possible changes
On the network today you can find a lot of different myths about the Unified State Exam. The most actively discussed topics are:
- the abolition of the exam in 2020;
- adding to the list of compulsory subjects of the English language or the history of Russia;
- introduction of the oral part to the exam in the Russian language.
We hasten to assure that at the moment there are no official documents confirming such innovations, as well as official declarations of intent to implement the ideas mentioned next year. If any of the changes discussed are accepted and new mandatory subjects appear on the USE 2020, we will be the first to inform you of this by providing a complete list of innovations.
Unified State Exam Calendar 2020
The first test for graduates of 2019-2020 will be the December essay, which all 11th graders of all educational institutions of the Russian Federation will write on the first Wednesday of December, namely 04.12.19.
Traditionally, the exam in 2020 will include three sessions:
Session | Dates |
Early | end of March - beginning of April |
Main | May 25, 2020 - July 3, 2020 |
September retake | September 2020 |
Within each of the USE sessions in the 2019-2020 academic year, the main and reserve days will be determined, in which it will be possible to pass compulsory subjects and disciplines of choice.

So, the calendar main session Examination 2020 will be as follows:
The dates of the September retakes will be announced additionally at the end of 2019.
Important! In September, students will be given a final attempt to retake compulsory subjects if an unsatisfactory result was obtained during the main USE exam 2020 in Russian or mathematics.
At the same time, submitting documents for the September retake, students who “fail” the exam in specialized mathematics can choose a basic level. Of course, this will deprive them of the opportunity to enter the desired university, but will allow them to obtain documents on education without delaying the resolution of the issue in the spring or summer of 2021.
Past Graduates
In 2020, not only 11th graders will be able to pass the exam in order to enter the university. And the graduates of past years. This opportunity should be taken if:
- last year, an unsatisfactory rating was obtained in 2 or more subjects;
- You want to retake the item in order to increase points, which will accordingly increase the chances of a budget place;
- there was a need to pass another subject (for example, we decided to enter a university in another direction).
Important! The duration of the USE certificate is 4 years. But, for young people who will be drafted into the army in the year of obtaining the USE certificate, the document is valid for a year.
So, if you are a graduate of the past years and firmly decided to pass the exam in 2020, we recommend that you visit the official website of FIPI and find out what changes have occurred in KIMs in the subject of interest, and then follow a simple algorithm:
- Find the nearest registration point on the exam.
- Before February 1, 2020, apply.
- Get notified by visiting the check-in point on a specified day.
The notification will provide all the necessary information: your individual number, exam dates and addresses of educational institutions, on the basis of which you will have to pass the exam in 2020.
Basic Rules
All the rooms where the exams are held are equipped with video cameras, which allows you to quickly identify all facts of discipline violation. That is why all 11-graders should learn not only about what compulsory subjects are included in the USE, but also about what should not be done in exams in 2020.
The rules of the Unified State Exam are strictly prohibited:
- Bring any communication devices, photo and video cameras, as well as programmable calculators into the office (the list of allowed items is defined for each subject of the exam).
- To take out KIMy and other materials from the audience (in digital or paper form).
- Talk with other participants in the audience.
- Share anything with other students.
- Leave the audience and be in the corridor without an accompanying person (going to the toilet, you must notify the observer).
Important! For any of the listed violations, the commission may annul the result of the exam of a particular participant, and in some cases all examiners in the class may suffer.
When a participant in the USE is removed from the class for good reason, a corresponding mark is put in his form. In this case, the work is not subject to verification, regardless of the degree of its implementation at the time of detection of the violation that caused the removal from the audience.
Filling in the forms
Regardless of whether you pass the required subjects or one of the elective exams in 2020, during the course of the work, it will be necessary to correctly fill out the USE forms.
Form No. 1 | For short answers to the tasks of the 1st part, which will be digitized and verified through a special system. |
Form No. 2 | For detailed answers of the 2nd part, which will be checked by experts |
In 2020, the format of the exam will not be changed, which means that all exams will be subject to the mandatory rules for filling out the form:
- Only responses recorded on the front of the form are evaluated.
- Drafts and entries on the back of the sheet are not subject to verification.
- Records are made in black ink (the pen can be capillary or gel).
- Numbers and letters must be written clearly.
- Before you answer in the form number 1 you can not skip cells.
- Between the words in the windows of the 1st form you can also not skip.
If, upon opening the envelope, you find that one of the forms is missing in the kit, there are more of them than there should be, or there are areas with print defects in the task (and even worse if in the answer form), immediately inform the organizers about this fact. Such forms should be replaced, but the fact of replacement should be documented, since all USE sets are accountable. If you are missing one form when completing the tasks of the 2nd part, contact the representative of the organizing party present in the class. Additional forms No. 2 must be issued at the request of the exam participant.
Verification of work and calculation of results
It will take 7-14 days to test the exam in 2020, but in practice the duration of processing the answers depends on the number of students and traditionally the subjects that are required to be taken (Russian language and mathematics) are checked for the longest time. In some subjects, it really takes a lot of time to check the 2nd part, because at least 2 independent experts should check each work, and in case of their disagreement, also a third.
When checking for each correctly completed task, the graduate is credited with primary points (for each subject there is a maximum), which are then transferred to test ones (maximum 100). It is believed that the examiner passed the subject if the result exceeds the established minimum threshold.
Important! Do not confuse the minimum exam score and the minimum passing score for entering a university. In the first case, we are talking about the points that are needed to obtain a document on education, and in the second about the result, which will allow you to apply for a budgetary place in a particular faculty of a particular institution in question.
Examination participants will be able to find out their score through the Unified Results Database, or in your account. It is impossible to know the 2020 passing score, as it will depend on the results that applicants and the competition for a particular specialty will submit. But you can know exactly what the passing score of 2019 was. This information is shared by most universities with applicants on the pages of their sites.
Appeal on the results of the exam
If the result of the exam is not as expected, and there is reason to suspect that the grade is underestimated, the law gives the graduate the right to appeal and demand a review of the results of the audit. But, here it is important to know several important points:
- It is possible to challenge only an expert check of the 2nd part (the result of the 1st part of the USE cannot be disputed).
- 2 days are allowed to appeal.
- You cannot appeal to established assessment criteria.
Although in practice it is extremely rare as a result of consideration of work that the appeals commission decides to underestimate the point, this option should not be completely discarded. When planning to defend your rights, you need to weigh the pros and cons and think through your arguments as clearly as possible and, of course, be psychologically prepared to defend your opinion before the commission.
Conclusion
Now you know exactly what subjects will be required at the USE 2020 and will be able to give an answer to everyone who is still tormented by the question of whether history or English will be a mandatory exam.
