The story of these saints is more like a fairy tale or legend. The prince of Murom fell ill with leprosy. His whole body was covered with scabs, but at night he had a prophetic dream. It said that a simple peasant woman, the daughter of a beekeeper named Fevronia, who lives near Murom, will be able to save him from suffering. The prince in the morning went in search of a girl, and really found a young healer in a small village. She was well versed in medicinal herbs and had an incredible gift.
Fevronia agreed to help the prince, but only if he marries her. Peter agreed to her terms, and after recovery he kept his word. For a long time the boyars did not recognize the peasant woman as princess, but she managed to win them over to herself with her kindness and generosity. Peter and Fevronia fell in love with each other, and therefore they never parted. They became an example of an ideal family. They canonized them in a church cathedral in 1547.
The history of the holiday
In Soviet times, the memory of saints was not revered due to existing prohibitions. In the 90s, church traditions began to revive. In the 2000s, the mayor of Murom proposed combining the celebration of City Day with a reverence for the memory of Peter and Fevronia. Contributed to this and the completion of the restoration of local churches.
Later, local authorities proposed to make July 8 the All-Russian day of marital fidelity and family happiness in memory of the princes living in Murom. The holiday should be an alternative to Valentine's Day. He was popularized in every possible way, and in 2008 he was approved at the federal level by State Duma deputies.
Now the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity is celebrated not only in large Russian cities, but also in small villages and towns. Relations between spouses have also taken up the tradition of reverence in other states - Ukraine, Belarus, France, Great Britain, Bulgaria, Germany.
