Sabantuy 2020

The event is celebrated annually on a new day. In large cities, the celebration is traditionally held on weekends - on the second or third Sunday of July. The exact schedule of Sabantuy becomes known in the spring, a few months before the main events.

There is no permanent, fixed date for this event. The reason is the long, centuries-old history of the holiday, which has not retained a reference to any particular day.

Sabantuy Holiday

A bit of history

To understand why the celebration does not have a fixed date, you will have to plunge into history. The word "sabantuy" is a derivative of two ancient Türkic words: "saban", which means "plow", and "thuja" or "thuja" (in another version, "that"), which means "holiday". Literally, a “plow holiday” is obtained, that is, a solemn celebration of the beginning of the “plow work”, plowing. Once Sabantuy was celebrated at the beginning of spring, as soon as the snow melted, and the earth warmed up to begin agricultural work. Over the centuries of its existence, the holiday has somewhat changed, and now it marks the end of the sowing season.

To tell exactly when, in what century this holiday appeared, historians today cannot. However, they agree that its roots should be sought in those days when the Turkic peoples professed not Islam, but Tengrism, since the deification of the forces of nature and worship of them are clearly visible in the original customs of Sabantuy. So, some researchers are inclined to see in Sabantua a symbolic celebration of the wedding of the Earth and the Plow - Mother and Father, female and male principles.

Initially, there were three options for holding in different regions of Tatarstan and Bashkiria. But to our time, all varieties harmoniously merged, and today the customs of celebration are practically the same for both peoples.

Sabantuy nowadays

Today this holiday is celebrated in stages - starting with small villages and villages, then in districts, large cities, and only then Kazan is included in the celebration, and after it Moscow. The triumph, as if from far away, is approaching the capital, leaving its residents time to prepare a worthy meeting.

In the villages, the event consists of two parts - collecting gifts, when on the eve of the day on horseback the young men travel around the village on horseback and collect gifts for the holiday, and Maidan - festivities. Initially, the word "Maidan" was called the place where competitions for the holiday will take place, a large venue specially prepared for general fun. Today, this is the meaning of all festivities.

Walking on Sabantuy

In large cities, including Kazan, Ufa, Moscow, Independence Square - the main platform, the center of the holiday, this is where the celebration begins and ends.

Sabantuy in Moscow

Annually, the organizers of the Sabantuy in Moscow are representatives of the Government of Tatarstan and the Government of Bashkortostan together with the Government of Moscow. They determine when, where and at what time the celebration begins.

A distinctive feature of the holiday is its inconsistent date. The Sabantuy 2020 schedule in Moscow will appear in early spring 2020 - as a rule, in the second half of March, an announcement is published on the organizers' official resources on what date Sabantuy 2020 will be celebrated in Moscow.A little later a detailed program of the event appears; Both Tatar and Bashkir diasporas are preparing their numbers.

For several years now, the main celebration has been taking place in Kolomenskoye Park - not so long ago the event moved there from Izmailovsky Park.
