history of the holiday

The Trinity is one of the greatest holidays of the Orthodox Church, although it is believed that some traditions of the celebration have passed from the time of pagan gods. He marks the unity of the Holy Spirit, the Father and His Son, which explains the origin of the name.

The story began after the death of Jesus Christ. As the Son of God bequeathed, on the fiftieth day His disciples - the Apostles gathered together. When everyone arrived, a bright flame appeared in the room, which did not burn. It turned out that it was the Holy Spirit who came down from heaven to reward the Apostles with a unique gift. They gained the opportunity to speak the languages of other nations. This was necessary for them in order to educate people, to tell them the sacrifice of Christ for the salvation of mankind.

As believers say

Pentecost Orthodox Christians celebrate three days:

  1. On the eve of Saturday night, people go to a temple or church for an all-night vigil.
  2. On Sunday, a festive liturgy is held, the Gospel of John is surely read.
  3. On Monday, people sanctify water, as well as tree branches and grass. Then, at home, the branches are dried and placed near the icons or in another place as a talisman from evil spirits.

Priests dress in green robes. In the temple, branches of birch, maple, oak are necessarily laid out, and the floor is covered with field grass and wormwood. Green is considered the color of eternal life and life-giving.

Service at the Trinity Church

On the eve of Pentecost, people clean the graves of the dead, leave treats for spirits, honor the memory of relatives who have passed away.

Modern and folk traditions

Most families will celebrate Trinity in 2020 according to the usual scenario. On Saturday, housewives usually clean up the house. Residents of rural areas will have more laborious work, because you need to clean the yard, if necessary, tint the house or touch up the gate, tear out weeds in the flower beds. Then in the house lay green branches of trees, archery, wormwood. It is believed that greenery protects the house from evil spirits that leave their usual habitats on the night before the holiday.

Interesting! In ancient times, people didn’t go to the forest at Pentecost, since it was believed that the mawkas could tickle to death. It was forbidden to swim in ponds, as mermaids could be dragged under water.

Women prepare treats for the festive table, but there are no traditions in cooking. Since time is not lean, you can put salads, sweets, meat snacks, etc. on the table. On Sunday, people often visit each other and have picnics in nature. In some settlements, especially small villages, where the primitive flavor is more preserved, folk festivals with songs and dances are organized.

Ancient customs

Unmarried girls used to make wreaths of wildflowers for themselves. Cornflowers, daisies, poppies were necessarily woven into them. Such a wreath was considered a charm from evil spirits, so the girls wore them all day, and in the evening went to the river. Each girl inserted a lighted candle into a wreath and sent it through the water, and then observed:

  • If the wreath swam far and fast, the girl was waiting for a quick marriage.
  • If the wreath immediately drowned, one should expect troubles and bad news.

Pentecost - it was also a celebration of the transition from spring to summer. On the outskirts of the village, the branches of two trees, most often birches or poplars, were intertwined so that an arch formed. Then the boys and girls walked in pairs through this arch and sang songs. In some regions, only young women passed through the arch.
