Water Day 2020

Water Day 2020

One of the most important environmental holidays in 2020 will be Water Day. And although it will be celebrated for the 18th time, it is not very popular among the population. The events held on this day will mainly be aimed at preserving water resources, improving the environmental situation and finding a solution to the problem of shortage of drinking water. In some countries, festivals and public holidays are organized.

World Water Day

The holiday was approved by the UN General Assembly in 1993. Although the story of his appearance begins a year earlier. At a conference held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, participants raised the issue of saving water resources, since their scarcity was already recorded. There was a proposal to establish an environmental holiday. Its purpose is to attract public attention to the problem. In early 1993, the UN signed a resolution, and in March thematic events were held for the first time. 30 countries took part in the festival. Every year their number increased.

Water Day is annually held under a certain slogan, although the goal remains unchanged - to attract public attention to the environmental problem. According to statistics, more people die from drought and water shortages than from diseases.

World Water Day 2020 will be March 22.

Water festival in different countries

The Slavs celebrated Water Day on the third day of the Trinity. He did not have a fixed date due to the fact that he was associated with rolling holidays. The triumph has pagan roots. People honored the Water-birthday and held public festivities in her honor. On this day it was forbidden to wash, wash dishes or floors, and also perform other work with water in order to show respect for an important natural resource. Some people even refused to drink. Boys and girls held various ceremonies in order to find a family and a happy future. For example, they threw rotten eggs at girls to marry and give birth to children.

In Russia, Belarus and other Slavic countries almost no long-standing traditions have been preserved, but there are states in the world that organize festivals and holidays in honor of water. Here are some of them:

  • China. Po Shui (the so-called holiday) lasts a whole week. An interesting legend is connected with him, which tells that once in China there was an evil demon ruler. He had 7 wives. They killed their husband, tired of enduring bullying. So that his spirit did not return to the country, they had to take turns keeping their spouse's head. To alleviate their suffering, local residents poured water on them.
  • Cyprus. Cataclysmos is associated with the memory of the global flood. It symbolizes resurrection and new life. People pour water on each other so that souls and bodies are purified. Fun celebrations are held on the 7th day after Easter.
  • Dagestan. The holiday, which has long-standing roots, falls on the 40th day after the spring equinox. Be sure to conduct an ancient rite. Young girls, covering their heads with white shawls, with 10-liter jugs go to a distant pond. Round dances and songs are sung there, and then, having filled jugs, they return home.
  • Thailand. On Mother’s Day, which is held in late October or early November, the Thais perform a beautiful ritual to thank the water and apologize for its use and pollution. On the shore of the ocean, rivers or ponds, they make small boats of palm leaves. They put a hot candle in them and put a few coins, as well as a lock of hair in order to cleanse everything bad. Then they put the boat on the water surface, after which it floats away.
  • Armenia. A holiday during which everyone pours out each other, is arranged in the summer. In Vardavar, it is forbidden to take offense at strangers who pour water over them. Boys always give girls red roses, and lovers release doves into the sky.

Themed festivals are held in Cambodia and Burma. Laotians water each other with water for the New Year.
