Science Day in Russia in 2020 will be celebrated not only in research institutes, centers and laboratories, but also in higher educational institutions. The work of scientists plays an important role in the development of individual industries and of all mankind. Among Russians there are many mathematicians, physicists, and other scientists well-known throughout the world, so for many people this holiday is an important event of the year.
Science Day in Russia in 2020 will be celebrated on February 8. The date of the celebration is fixed, and therefore does not change from year to year. In 2020, the holiday falls on Saturday, but it is not considered an official weekend. Only employees of those centers and enterprises that do not work on Saturdays will rest.
How did
Russian science has given the world many great names - Lomonosov, Mendeleev, Landau, Pavlov, Korolev. Scientists have been revered at all times. Their achievements and the results of lengthy research were significant. It is not surprising that a holiday was even created for people working in this area.
The holiday was officially “born” in 1999 after the signing of a special Decree by President Boris Yeltsin. This event happened on June 7th. The date was not chosen by chance - it is dedicated to the anniversary of the creation of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). Nowadays, the RAS is a center for basic research in various sciences - from the humanities to technology. The Academy was founded back in the XVIII at the order of Peter the Great. After the collapse of the USSR, the RAS was recreated. Now in its divisions about 45 thousand scientists work.
During the Soviet Union, the holiday was celebrated on the third Sunday of April. The date was timed to coincide with the "Outline of a Plan of Scientific and Technical Works" written by Vladimir Lenin from April 18 to 25. This document determined the direction of development of Soviet science. By the way, older scientists are now celebrating a professional holiday on the third Sunday of the spring month.
Tradition of celebration
On the Day of Russian Science, doctors and candidates of science, researchers, professors and academicians will traditionally be congratulated. Postgraduate students, researchers, as well as other people who are somehow connected with this industry also have a relationship with the holiday. Officials from the Ministry of Science and Education, as well as university professors who train future scientists, are also congratulated.
The holiday can be considered young, but during its existence certain traditions have formed. On this day:
- conduct seminars and conferences where they talk about the latest discoveries;
- arrange round tables to discuss the future and development prospects of individual research areas;
- contests and quizzes are held among students;
- organize meetings with famous personalities, researchers, discoverers;
- broadcast documentaries about new or important inventions.
On this day, usually hold celebrations, in which employees are awarded with awards and diplomas for achievements, provide grants for new research. Local authorities often organize a concert, which is the completion of the official part. In research centers, an open day is often arranged. All traditions are aimed at attracting public attention to scientific progress, new inventions and achievements, as well as encouraging the work of researchers.

Scientists in different countries celebrate their professional holiday on different dates. Several days have been approved at the international level, that is, they apply to all employees of the scientific field, regardless of nationality and place of residence.
World Science Day
Celebrate it in European and other countries on November 10. Celebrate World Science Day since 2002. The holiday was approved by UNESCO after the participants of a scientific conference, which brought together scientists from different parts of the world, presented the idea of creation.
In order to strengthen public interaction with science for solving a number of important tasks, lectures and seminars are held on this day in schools and higher educational institutions. Museums hold special exhibitions, and for scientists organize conferences on various topics.
Darwin Day
This is another Science Day that takes place internationally. It has a fixed celebration date - February 12, which is timed to coincide with the birthday of Charles Darwin. This holiday successfully combines reverence for the achievements of the great scientist and the popularization of science, in particular among young people. In Russia, it is not very popular, although in Novosibirsk it is informally celebrated annually. As part of the celebration, conferences and other events are organized in Akademgorodok.
