About the holiday

Every year St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on the same date - March 17th. In 2020, nothing will change, and this rule will be respected again. Muscovites and residents of other Russian cities will pay tribute to the man who lived in the IV-V century.

When is St. Patrick's Day: date

Not much information has been preserved about him, but reliable sources remain. One of them is the autobiographical Confession, thanks to which historians have found reliable facts. Even after hundreds of years, Christians around the world remember the deeds and merits of St. Patrick. He was born in that part of the island of Great Britain, which was under the rule of the ancient Romans. Then his name was Mavin Sukkat. When the boy was 16 years old, pirates abducted him and sold him into slavery. So he ended up in Ireland, where he lived for another 6 years. Being a prisoner, the young man adopted Christianity, which became his salvation in captivity. He prayed for freedom and return to his homeland, and a few years later he managed to return home.

However, he soon decided to return to Ireland, as he saw a vision. In it, the Lord turned to him to try to convert the wayward inhabitants of Ireland to Christianity. The dream-inspired missionary fell in love with the Irish, and monotheism was quickly accepted. It is also known that writing came to Ireland thanks to Saint Patrick.

The symbols of the holiday are:

  • green gamma;
  • shamrock;
  • leprechauns;
  • beer and whiskey.

Symbols of St. Patrick's Day

As noted

It is a known fact that there are absolutely no snakes on the island. It is Patrick who is considered the person who expelled them from Ireland. Tourists and pilgrims climb the mountain to visit the place where the saint performed his deed. One of the main traditions on St. Patrick's Day is to wear a shamrock on clothes. It is also considered a Christian symbol. Shamrocks are often dried and placed at the bottom of the glass, which is then filled with a traditional Irish drink - whiskey.

On holiday, it is customary to wear green clothing, which is a symbol of the flourishing of nature and the arrival of spring. No wonder Ireland is often called the emerald island - its hills and valleys can inspire everyone. Also, parade participants put on unusual hats and green shades with a shamrock symbol. In some bars you can even find green beer!

March 17 in Ireland and several other countries hold parades with national music and dance. Many Irish are reincarnated as national heroes and fairy-tale characters. Celebrations usually do not stop for a full 5 days. At this time, bagpipe sounds are heard everywhere. Competitions, concerts and festive fireworks are held. Many famous buildings and architectural objects are highlighted in bright green, symbolizing the holiday. Sometimes even small ponds turn green.

Interesting fact. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Irish authorities banned the opening of institutions on March 17.With this law, they tried to protect the Irish from alcohol abuse. Only in the 70s this law was repealed.
