The date of the holiday was chosen by chance. The Catholic Church honors on this day the memory of the Great Martyr Apollonia of Alexandria. She lived in the III century, when Christianity was suppressed by the Gentiles. She believed in one God, for which she suffered. She was asked to renounce Christianity. In order for the woman to do this, she was brutally tortured - her teeth were pulled out with large forceps.
When the time came for the execution, she asked to be untied to kneel for renunciation. But after her legs became free, she immediately rushed into the already prepared flaming bonfire. Apollonia burned alive. It happened on February 9th. She was later referred to the martyrs. It is believed that the appeal and prayers to Apollonia help get rid of the most severe toothache.
Important! Russia also celebrates International Dentist Day on March 6th. The holiday is dedicated to the appearance of the first drill in the distant 1790.
A bit of history
Nowadays, many people want to have even teeth and a beautiful smile, and doctors often repeat that the health of the whole organism depends on the state of the oral cavity. Dentistry is a developed branch of medicine, and the profession of a dentist is considered prestigious and highly paid. Although trips to these doctors are not always pleasant (some people are even afraid of them), the torment is worth the result.
Dentistry was born at the end of the XVII - at the beginning of the XVIII century, although historians have discovered evidence of dental treatment from an earlier period. For example, the first manual drill is about 9 thousand years old. In the XVIII century, a turning point occurred, as they began to treat teeth more often than pull out. A great contribution to the development of dentistry was made by Pierre Fochard, who was the first to manufacture dental bridges and crowns.
With each new generation, more attention was paid to the health and beauty of teeth, and therefore, the services of dentists became more and more in demand. Despite this, a professional holiday for dentists appeared only at the end of the last century. The initiator was the American Dental Association. Other countries supported the idea, so in a few years the holiday acquired international status.
In Russia, World Dental Day in 2020 will be celebrated for the 19th time. The first events dedicated to the holiday of dentists were held in 2001.
Tradition of celebration
The main tradition of the holiday, which will continue in 2020, is the involvement of the public in diseases of the oral cavity. For this, in some clinics often arrange shares of free examinations and consultations. Often, dentists conduct master classes, teach adults and children how to brush their teeth or take care of the oral cavity.
