From July 24 to August 9, 2020, the 32nd Summer Olympic Games will be held in Japan and from the August 25 to September 6 the 16th Summer Paralympic Games. The organizing committee of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics from September 26, 2018 announced a recruitment for volunteers around the world. It is planned to recruit from 80 to 90 thousand people.
Candidate Requirements
The main directions where the involvement of volunteers 2020 is needed:
- assistance in organizing games;
- communication with the media;
- work with newly arrived foreign spectators;
- work in places of residence, "Olympic villages" of athletes from different parts of the world;
- organization of communication with medical staff.
Requirements for volunteers:
- all who were born before April 1, 2002, but who were not at the time of the Games 80 years old;
- when applying for the organization of "transport support", the presence of a driver's license in Japan and driving experience;
- an additional advantage will be the presence of a sports discharge;
- Mandatory knowledge of English, Japanese and preferably a third language;
- the advantage in the selection is the experience in providing care and support for the elderly and persons with disabilities;
- the possibility of opening a Japanese visa for the period of the Games.
Note: an important quality of a volunteer all over the world is stress resistance, especially when resolving conflict situations between fans or representatives of warring countries who have come to support their compatriots.
It is important for the volunteer to know that:
- its activities are free and voluntary;
- attitude to all participants, guests and employees should be as polite and friendly as possible;
- if a conflict occurs, first of all, it is necessary to notify the site coordinator;
- in case of failure to fulfill the task or impossibility to implement it, urgently inform the curator;
- his actions should not discredit the host country of the Games;
- personal belongings and values are under his own responsibility.
The deadline for registering an application for selection for volunteers is until mid-December 2018. You can submit your candidacy on the website of the "volunteers" of the Games tokyo2020.org/en/special/volunteer. Registration of applications does not occur on the basis of the principle: whoever has applied earlier will take the vacancy faster, and provides equal rights for all participating persons.
A distinctive feature of volunteering at the Games in Tokyo 2020 is the implementation of the program for volunteers with visual impairment. For this category of people, the program was launched on September 26, 2018, and the deadline for accepting applications from them was extended by another month to create equal conditions for everyone. For visually impaired volunteers, a separate application form is provided on the site, where data is filled out in voice mode, and a Tokyo-2020 site employee fills out the questionnaire in electronic form.
Documents and data for registration of the application
To consider the application for participation in the casting of volunteers, it is necessary to prepare scanned versions of such documents:
- passport, if necessary, a driver's license in Japan;
- certificates of proficiency in foreign languages TOEFL, IELTS or any other equivalent certificates of level of English and other languages.
Additional information registered on the official website of the candidates:
- Name, gender;
- addresses and contact details of relatives for emergency cases;
- experience of the volunteer, education and place of work;
- work experience in sports, language proficiency, vehicle driving experience;
- what type of volunteering is preferred for the volunteer himself, you must choose one of the ten proposed.
What will the volunteer get
After approval of the candidacy, volunteers receive upon arrival in Japan:
- a uniform confirming his belonging to the volunteers - shirt, pants, jacket, shoes, bag, cap;
- free food and drinks for the period of the Games;
- travel expenses equivalent to 1,000 yen / day (about $ 9)
- insurance and transport benefits for traveling around Tokyo.
Payment of a visa, round-trip tickets, accommodation falls on the volunteer himself.
Since volunteers are “voluntary workers” with a tight schedule, they have one day off per week, which is provided on day 6. On his day off, he is allowed to visit stadiums and other sports facilities, because not all volunteers are in the venues of the Games, many work in logistics, hotels, and the Olympic Village. Over the weekend, the volunteer has the right to freely attend any competition and be in the very center of the grandiose Olympic Games 2020.
Directions for volunteers at the 2020 Games
When submitting an application, the contestant independently chooses one of the 10 proposed areas, but this is not a guarantee that the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee is obliged to approve the selected:
- Any type of volunteer activity - the total number of volunteers is 80,000-90000.
- Coordinator and supervisor: fan flows; entrance tickets to the competition venue; security level; flows of foreign athletes, their escort to hotels, stadiums or the "Olympic Village" (for this category it is planned to select 16000-25000).
- Assistance in conducting and organizing a competition (15000-17000).
- Transportation of athletes between the "village" and the stadiums - the transport sector (10000-14000).
- Support: international delegations at airports; athletes in preparation for the competition; participants of the Games when communicating with the media after the competition (8000-12000).
- Issuance coordination: uniforms for other volunteers; identifiers to the participants of the Games; equipment for teams, journalists, maintenance staff and trainers (8000-10000).
- Medicine: first aid for injuries of athletes, fans, employees; organization of delivery to the hospital; assistance to employees of the anti-doping committee for collecting samples from athletes (4000-6000).
- Technological support: input and display of competition results; assistance in the installation, commissioning of communication equipment (2000-4000).
- Media: assisting Japanese and international media in conducting photos, videos, interviews with athletes, press conferences of participants and trainers (2000-4000).
- Ceremonial: delivery of medals, awards; delivery; organization of their movement in Tokyo stadiums (1000-2000).
Volunteer Training Program
After being approved as a volunteer of the 2020 Olympic Games, the volunteer constantly for two years undergoes joint briefing and training in the company with other volunteers.
Training Stages:
- January to June 2019: orientation notifications in the form of a briefing and interview.
- From February 2019: fact-finding sessions.
- From September 2019: conducting training.
- From October 2019: general preparation.
- From March 2020: notification of the definition and designation of the type of volunteer activity.
- From April 2020: role-based, leadership training.
- From May 2020: general distribution, site approval.
- From June 2020: field training.
Japanese volunteers need a personal presence at least one familiarization session, the schedule and venue of which are posted on the official website of the volunteer movement. For foreign volunteers living outside of Japan, the sessions are held via video link from March to July 2019.
What the volunteer shouldn’t do
In case of contact with a person infected with the virus, the volunteer urgently needs to inform the immediate supervisor and be isolated, the necessary time is determined by the medical staff, depending on the disease.
Volunteers are forbidden to post information about the Games, their conduct, both positive and negative in the media, as well as photos, posts in social networks about their volunteer activities without coordination with the organizing committee.
Volunteers are forbidden to initiate conflict situations, and in case of violation of human rights, it is necessary to inform the higher management.
City volunteer
In addition to the Olympic volunteers, Tokyo organized a set of categories of City Volunteers, which are planned to recruit at least 30 thousand. You can apply for participation in this project on the website www.city-volunteer.metro.tokyo.jp. The Tokyo metropolitan government confirms the candidacy, group applications can be submitted, however, a decision is made with respect to each participant separately. Urban-type volunteers are needed to help maintain the spirit of Ootenashi (Japanese hospitality) and the celebration of the Olympic Games. Requirements and the rest of the approval and training process is similar to Games Volunteers.
