European Championship Qualifiers in 2020

In the fall of 2017, the UEFA executive committee decided to change the rules of the European Championship qualifiers. The new system was developed in order to improve the quality of football shown during the qualification for the Euro, as well as so that weaker teams could take part in the main football tournament in Europe.

Tournament Regulations

As before, all 55 teams from UEFA participate in the selection for the Euro.

Nevertheless, this is the only major similarity of the League of Nations with previous qualification competitions. The main innovations adopted by UEFA are listed below:

1. All teams participating in the qualification are divided into 4 divisions depending on their rating. Thus, the 12 best squads of the continent were in Group A, the less powerful, including the Russian national team, in Division B, and the rest in League C and D.
2. The first two divisions consist of four groups, each of which has three teams. There will be one group of four teams in the third strongest division of the European teams, and there will be four quartets in the weakest league.
3. The main stage of the tournament was from September to November 2018. Each of the participants played both at home and away.
4. The top four teams of the division And in the summer of 2019 will take part in the final tournament, the venue of which will be determined in December this year.
5. Winners of weaker divisions will receive a promotion. The worst teams of the groups, respectively, will move to weaker leagues.
6. The final tournament will also be played between the group winners.

Qualification for the Euro itself will begin in March 2019. The schedule of the qualifying matches of the European Championship 2020 was determined a little earlier by drawing lots. Preliminaries Campaign Schedule:

The draw for the group stage of the qualifying tournament was held on 01.12. 2018 in Dublin.

All teams were divided into groups as follows.

According to the results of the qualifying tournament games, the first 20 participants of the 2020 European Championship will become known. The remaining four participants in Euro 2020 will be determined by the results of the League of Nations. Trips through the League of Nations will be defined as follows: the four best teams from each division of the tournament among those that could not qualify for the main European football tournament through the usual qualification games will take part in the playoff round.

The draw for the playoff qualifications will be held on November 22, 2019. And then on March 26-31, 2020, butt matches of European qualification will be held.

Divisions

As mentioned above, there are four divisions in the League of Nations. The following is the composition of each group of this stage of the selection for the 2020 European Championship, as well as their current tournament situation.

Division A

Group A1 is played by France, the Netherlands and Germany. The current world champions lead in the group with 7 points in the asset, while the Netherlands and Germany have 3 and 1 points respectively, and the “orange”, who played only two games, have the victory over Germany in the asset.

In group A2 the first place is shared by Belgium and Switzerland, which currently have 6 points. The Icelanders who made a splash at the Euro last have no points so far.

The third group of the division is led by the Portuguese. The reigning European champions have not suffered a single defeat in two matches. Their closest pursuers Italians have 4 points. The trio is closed by the Poles with one draw in three games.

The vice-champion of the world - the Croatian national team - takes the last place in his group, having lost a lot to the Spaniards and tied with the English. “Red Fury”, in turn, scored 6 points, while the British have 2 less. It is worth noting that the Croats have a game in stock.

According to the results of matches played, places in the group were distributed as follows:

Division B

The first group of the league are Ukraine, Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Yellow and Blue are the undisputed leaders in their group. The Czechs have only three points in three games, and the Slovak team could not score a single point in two matches.

In the second group, the Russian team leads. Our team beat the Turks twice and tied with Sweden. Thus, the Russian team has 7 points in the asset, the Turks have 3 points, and the Swedes have only one point for a draw with our team.

In the third group of the division, a situation similar to group B1 developed. Bosnia and Herzegovina is in the first place, followed by the Austrians, who have 3 points in 2 games, and the North Irish have not yet got one point.

Finally, Wales became the leader in the fourth group of the championship with 6 points. Following are the Danes and Irish, who scored 4 and 1 points, respectively.

Division C

The leaders in League C groups are Israel, Finland, Norway and Serbia, with the Finnish national team not having a single loss in 4 games. Second places, in turn, are occupied by Scotland, Greece, Bulgaria and Montenegro. Among the outsiders of these groups are Albania, Estonia, Slovenia and Lithuania.

Four will get to the European Championship from Division C:

Division D

The best teams of the weakest of the Nation League divisions are Georgia, Luxembourg, Kosovo and Macedonia, and without defeat, only Georgia has 12 points. Second places in the groups are Kazakhstan, Belarus, Azerbaijan and Gibraltar. The last team was able to win two victories in a row for the first time in its history, and the victory in the match with Armenia was the first in the history of the Gibraltar team, created in 2016 together with the national team of Kosovo. Outsiders of the division are Andorra, which scored 2 points, San Marino, Malta and Liechtenstein. The last team was able to bring themselves to victory over Gibraltar.

The European Championship is, along with the UEFA Champions League, the most important of European football tournaments. Changes made to the selection rules for this championship will improve the quality of football thanks to the system of divisions, in which teams of equal strength play, as well as enable weaker teams to get into one of the most prestigious tournaments for national teams.
