Along with the usual New Year, Sollal is celebrated in Korea. The country's main holiday, the Korean New Year in 2020, will be celebrated on January 25th. Its date usually falls between the end of January and the middle of February, and marks the arrival of spring in Korea according to the lunar calendar. In another way, it is also called the "Oriental" or Chinese New Year.
Korean New Year traditions
Sollal is celebrated for three days: New Year's Eve, directly festive, and the following days. During this period, life in the country freezes. Small shops and cafes leave for the weekend, the same applies to government agencies.
Korean New Year is considered a purely family holiday. Therefore, everyone goes to visit relatives, gather in their father's house. Koreans observe traditions and ceremonies passed down from generation to generation.
Sebe
Spending a holiday is supposed to be in hanbok. And so will the Korean New Year 2020 residents of Korea. Hanbok is a traditional garment that is usually worn by the younger generation of the family. In these robes, it is customary to bow low to the elders. The ceremony is called "sebe." In response to the bow, the elders pronounce New Year's wishes and thank the children with a symbolic amount of money - “sebon”. This tradition is honored impeccably in all corners of the country.

In addition to the fun, it is customary in Sullal to commemorate deceased relatives. At dawn, the Koreans set the table, put on a traditional robe, and worship the ancestors. Usually the ceremony of "chare" is held at the beginning of the holiday, before the "sebe". The main difference of this ceremony is that during the "spell" they remember the deceased ancestors, and during the "sebe" - they honor the still alive.

Another interesting tradition is called “roofing”. According to her, all Koreans become one year older during Sollal. Earlier in Korea, individual birthdays were not celebrated. Therefore, in the New Year everyone simply threw +1 to age, even newborns. Now, birthdays are celebrated separately, but the conditional tradition remains.
Ttok and ttokkuk
The traditional treat in Sollal is the ttok rice cake. Spicy ttokkuk soup is also being prepared for the festive table. It is believed that if a person ate a whole bowl of soup with dumplings, then he became older by one year. Therefore, when Koreans talk about age, you can often hear the question: "How many bowls of Tokokuk have you eaten in your whole life?"
Previously, traditional dishes were prepared on the day of the first full moon, and this is already 15 days before Sollal. Now this tradition is more and more ignored, and they can cook the ttok and ttokkuk even without a reason. But all the same, pies and soup will certainly be on the festive table in honor of the Korean New Year 2020.

Celebration of Sollal is not limited to ordinary gatherings at the table. Usually the holiday is very active. Someone prefer the traditional board game "Yunori". Men and boys go outside to fly kites. Also, the male half can play “chegichagi” - this is the Korean version of football, which uses a soft ball.
Girls and women ride traditional Korean swings. Such pair swinging on a swing in the form of a big boat is called "nolttvigi". During rocking, each of the girls tries to perform some kind of acrobatic trick.
They also play "konginolie" - juggling with five pebbles.
What do they give to Sollal?
Koreans prefer to give extremely useful gifts. Most often these are various gift certificates. This is a great option, because the one who received it will be able to dispose of the donated amount.
Various food packages or cosmetics are also often presented. They can beautifully wrap and present butter, cereals, canned goods, as well as shower gels, shampoos, toothpastes and creams. As a present, you can also get household chemicals, which will later come in handy on the farm.
For Koreans, the usual New Year is just a convention. Young people can get out to a party or spend an evening with friends. But the main holiday of winter is Sollal. It is this celebration that everyone celebrates, these days families are reunited. Koreans honor ancient traditions. Despite the fact that traditional outfits are expensive, they try to have hanbok and solbim in their wardrobe in order to celebrate Sollal correctly.
