Are you interested in when the first autumn holidays will take place at a school or gymnasium, and also want to know if the periods of rest for first-graders and older children coincide?
School year structure
A document containing the structure of the upcoming school year is approved in each educational institution before the start of the educational process. As a rule, this happens in the first half of August.
In scheduling the school’s work, the administration relies on the recommended working and vacation time grids, production calendars approved by the government in 2019 and 2020, as well as other regulatory documents. Nevertheless, in the presence of weighty arguments, each school has the right to deviate from the recommended deadlines and approve its own work schedule, which differs from other educational institutions of a settlement or district.
In this case, only a few basic rules must be observed:
- From September 1 to May 25, students should have at least 30 vacation days.
- Vacations cannot be less than 7 calendar days.
- Rest periods should begin on Monday.
- Summer vacation period cannot be less than 2 months.
- When transferring holidays, a shift of the schedule of more than 2 weeks is not allowed.
Information on the structure of the 2019-2020 school year should be communicated to parents at the first parental meeting and posted on the school’s website.
Semester system
The semester system involves dividing the school year into 4 quarters, which in turn are combined in two accounting periods, called semesters. It was through this system that for many decades they studied in all schools. Many educational institutions prefer this work schedule today. Most of the out-of-school educational organizations of the artistic-aesthetic and sports directions work according to the semester system.
pros
- a single schedule in different educational institutions that the child attends;
- the absence of torn training modules (as a rule, teachers set intermediate results before the holidays, which allows children to relax without the need for a constant repetition of training material);
- a long study period (semester), allowing you to make the optimal accumulation of grades, and if necessary, increase your score.
Minuses
- long training modules;
- unequal distribution of periods of study (3rd quarter is much longer than the rest);
- annual assessment is based on 2 semester ratings, which often leads to controversial issues.
Vacation Calendar
For students whose schools operate according to the semester system, the first holidays of the 2019-2020 school year will begin on Monday October 28th.
Since National Unity Day falls on Monday November 4 this year, students whose educational institutions work on a five-day basis will receive as many as 10 days off in a row from Saturday 10/26/19 to 11/04/19 inclusive.
The vacation period for six-day schools does not look so rosy, because for teachers and students on Saturday, October 26, the working day and rest period are automatically reduced from 10 to 9 calendar days.
The first working day of the 2nd quarter in both versions of the work schedules will be Tuesday, November 5th.
Trimester system
The trimester education system is relatively young, but today it is widespread in lyceums and gymnasiums of Russia.
Unlike the semester, the system of trimesters divides the year into three training modules, each of which in turn is divided into two parts by a short vacation period.
pros
- less burden on students due to more frequent periods of rest;
- more even distribution of study time (each training block consists of 5 weeks);
- annual assessment is set on the basis of three totals, which eliminates controversial issues.
Minuses
- mismatch of vacation periods with other educational institutions;
- interruption of the educational process in the middle of the module, which often negatively affects the performance of some students;
- frequent vacations force working parents to decide on child care during working hours.
Vacation Calendar
For schoolchildren who study according to the trimester system, the autumn holidays will begin earlier than in educational institutions working according to the semester schedule, namely on October 7th. The rest period for 5 days is 9 calendar days (October 5-13), and for 6 days it is 8 days (October 6-13).
The first working day after the October holiday for the children will be Monday, October 14th.
Important! The dates when the first autumn holidays of the coming 2019-2020 begin and end at school will be the same for first-graders and other students.
An additional bonus for the trimester system is the second autumn vacation, which will be held from November 18 to November 24 in the 2019-2020 academic year and will give students 9 more days off in a row.
Is date offset possible?
The decision on the shift (the so-called transfer) of vacation periods can be made by the administration of the educational institution, if there are good reasons for this.
As a rule, the first autumn holidays with the trimester system are extremely rare, since the shift of dates leads to an uneven distribution of training modules. With the semester system, vacations are postponed more often.
The start date of the vacation can be shifted both towards the reduction of the first academic unit, and towards its increase in such cases:
- force majeure circumstances that force you to leave for vacations ahead of schedule;
- weather conditions (relevant for some regions of Russia);
- exceeding the epidemiological threshold of morbidity (at the beginning of the school year it is extremely rare).
Thus, you can safely plan a family vacation, long trips or improving the child’s health, starting from the dates mentioned in the article.
Of course, it would not be amiss to preliminarily take an interest in the school’s work schedule with the class teacher, because it may not coincide with the recommended calendar, if such a decision is made by the leadership of the school.
