Expo 2020 in Dubai

Expo 2020 in Dubai

World Expo 2020 will be held in one of the fastest growing cities in the world - Dubai. Especially for this event, a new futuristic area is being built in the desert, which for many years after it will be the place of implementation of new startups and the work of researchers in the field of science and modern technology.

Expo 2020 Dubai

What it is

The Expo or World Exhibition is a world-wide event whose history began in 1851. It is held every five years in different parts of the world, lasts from 3 to 6 months and gathers up to two hundred participants (entire countries, public and international communities, private companies). The exhibition is held under the patronage of the International Bureau of Exhibitions. Its member states (160 countries in total) determine the venue by voting.

Interesting! The World Exhibition ranks third in the ranking of events affecting the culture and economy of the world community, where it is second only to the Olympic Games and the World Cup.

The UAE has applied for the Expo 2020 in Dubai in 2011. Among those who applied for accommodation were also Turkish Izmir, Brazilian Sao Paulo and Russian Yekaterinburg. It was the latter that won Dubai in the final round in 2013 with 116 votes to 47. But Yekaterinburg is again a contender for the Expo 2025 and will compete for the honorary title with the cities of Baku (Azerbaijan) and Osaka (Japan).

Dubai

What is going to be there?

Expo 2020 is dedicated to the upcoming golden anniversary of the UAE - in 2021 the young state will turn 50 years old. The exhibition should become a kind of “springboard” for introducing progressive ideas of sustainable development and strengthening the emirate’s reputation as a world center of great opportunities. It will be a meeting place for leading inventors, scientists and experts who will share ideas on solving global problems of the planet: rational use of water and resources, alternative sources of energy, economic stability and transport support.

On a note! The UAE is the first country in the Middle East region to host an exhibition of this magnitude. Expo 2020 will be held here between October 20, 2020 and April 10, 2021 with the slogan: “By uniting minds, we create the future”.

According to various forecasts, up to 25 million guests will attend the grand event, 70% of which will be representatives from around the world. Its implementation will bring the country's economy about 23 billion dollars (24.4% of GDP), which will undoubtedly stimulate the development of all industries in the region.

Preparation process

Preparation for the exhibition is divided into 2 areas - the construction of the exhibition complex and the creation of the necessary infrastructure (roads, hotels, metro stations, entertainment centers, etc.). Their construction and holding of the exhibition itself will cost $ 35 billion. Most of this amount will be allocated by the Government of the Emirate, and the remainder will come from private investors.

Dubai Expo 2020 Pavilion

Expo 2020 will host the new Dubai Trade Center, designed near the Jebel Ali Port and Al Maktoum International Airport, almost at the same distance from Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The quarter covers an area of 438 km². This will be a high-tech project, where innovative design will be combined with environmental design technologies and minimal energy consumption. So, the facades of the pavilions will be equipped with solar panels: they will produce up to 50% of the electricity needed to organize the work of the exhibition complex. another half of the electricity will be produced from renewable sources. Curtains made of photovoltaic material will be placed above the main highways of the quarter, which in the evening will act as a huge screen for projecting images.

The trefoil-shaped exhibition complex will unite the central square of Al Wasl (this is the historical name of Dubai), which, by analogy with the traditional oriental market, will represent an indoor space. each of its rays will represent one of the thematic parts:

  • “Opportunity” - about the development of the potential of each person in the context of the growing population of the planet for a successful future
  • “Mobility” - on the development of innovative solutions in the transport and logistics sphere, the creation of infrastructure and virtual communications necessary for the movement of people, the exchange of ideas and goods;
  • “Sustainability” is about caring for the planet and its resources, researching water conservation technologies, developing alternative energy sources, using salt water in agriculture.

Dubai hosts Expo 2020

Another grand event that will take place within the framework of Expo 2020 will be the opening of the tallest skyscraper in the world, which will surpass Burj Khalifa with a height of 828 m by 100 m. The project of a unique skyscraper was developed by the Spaniard Santiago Calatrava. By the way, he managed to get around 11 competitors and won the closed competition for projects to design the national pavilion of Dubai. The latter should become the largest at the exhibition and fully reveal its motto “By unifying minds, we create the future”. The pavilion with an area of 15,000 m² will accommodate not only exhibition areas, but also an assembly hall, a restaurant courtyard and VIP zones. In his project, Calatrava was inspired by the wings of a falcon, which are a symbol of the UAE and are reflected on the country's coat of arms. By the way, it is believed that falconry appeared in Arabia and, according to the official version, became an incentive for the unification of the Emirates.

Benefits for Dubai

The period of preparation and direct holding of Expo 2020 will become a powerful incentive for economic, cultural and social development for Dubai. At this time, an active growth of the labor market is expected: more than 200,000 new jobs will be created. In addition, the venue of the exhibition inevitably attracts foreign entrepreneurs and contributes to the influx of international investment capital. Another "bonus" is forecasted a significant increase in prices for residential and commercial real estate in Dubai. The business and cultural infrastructure created for the exhibition will be used by local residents for a long time and will attract many tourists.

Expo 2020 should be a new stage in the development of international relations, which will provide access to the markets of many states, in particular Africa and Asia. The UAE has always taken a position of tolerance and peaceful resolution of issues in the region, so the exhibition should be an additional reason to strengthen mutual understanding between all the states of the planet and their unification for the development of the world economy and joint progress.
