The 2020 Youth Winter Olympics is an international sporting event for athletes aged 14-18. The dates of the games are from January 10 to January 19, 2020. Representatives from 70 countries are expected to attend. Previous competitions were held in 2016 in the Norwegian Lillehammer.
Competition Master Selection Procedure
The idea of organizing a sports forum belongs to the former head of the IOC, J. Rogge. It was approved at the Guatemalan session of the International Olympic Committee in July 2007. The first youth games were held in Innsbruck (Austria) in January 2012.
The decision to host the games in Lausanne was made on July 31, 2015 at the 128th session of the IOC, held in Malaysian Kuala Lumpur. The Swiss rivaled the only rival of the Romanian city of Brasov by 61 votes (71 vs. 10). They also announced their intention to hold the event, but Russian Sochi, Bulgarian Sofia and American Lake Placid were not included in the list of candidates. Lausanne never hosted the Olympics, but has extensive experience in hosting world championships. In particular, there were matches of the football world cup of 1954, the World Cup of 1992, 1997 and 2002 in figure skating, as well as the championship of the planet in gymnastics in 1997.
Youth Winter Games Format
One of the main objectives of the event is to promote the spread of a healthy lifestyle among the younger generation, as well as to attach it to the values of the world Olympic movement. Many participants in these competitions subsequently come to the adult Olympics and achieve serious success.
In terms of their format, organization level, sports program and the order of youth competitions, they are as close as possible to the real Olympics. Before the start, the stadium will host a colorful opening ceremony, during which delegations from each country will pass in front of numerous spectators. Meetings with professional athletes, seminars, master classes and other educational practices are also provided. At the end of the games, a closing ceremony will take place.
Venues
The Organizing Committee did not make a secret of where the Youth Olympic Games will be held in 2020. On his official website, he said that the competition will take place in Lausanne itself, in the vicinity of the city in the alpine zone, in the French region of Jura and on the shores of Lake Geneva. The Olympic Village Cluster will be organized at the University Center of Lausanne. To avoid excessive concentration of athletes, the arrival of participants is organized in two stages of 1880 people.
Also, the places of competitions in certain sports have become known. In Lausanne itself, competitions will be held in the following disciplines:
- hockey;
- skating;
- figure skating.
Curling competitions will be held in the town of Champery. Winners in skiing, freestyle, snowboarding, ski mountaineering will be determined in Leysin, Villard and Le Diabler, which are located in the Alps. In the place de Russ will be organized competitions in biathlon, Nordic combined and ski jumping. In St. Moritz will reveal the strongest in bobsledding, skeleton and luge.
Program
In the upcoming competitions, 81 sets of medals will be raffled, which is 11 more than the games in Lillehammer.Previously, the main program exactly corresponded to the format of the "adult" Olympics. It was represented by the following disciplines:

- bobsleigh;
- figure skating;
- skating;
- curling;
- Ice hockey;
- freestyle;
- snowboarding
- skeleton;
- short track;
- ski jumping;
- northern combination;
- skiing.
Following the principles of gender equality, the executive committee of the International Olympic Committee adjusted the program of youth Olympic games in 2020, including a number of female forms and sports disciplines new for such events that are interesting for young people in the competition list. Ski mountaineering has been added to it, combining sections for skiing and ordinary cross-country skiing. Winners will be identified in personal, sprint and relay races (boys and girls of 17-18 years old participate). In addition, women's doubles will appear in the luge program, and a separate classification for girls in ski biathlon.
Sports fans will enjoy an unusual mixed hockey tournament in the 3x3 format, the participants of which will be the athletes born in 2004 and 2005 They will present eight men's and women's teams, which will play in a circular pattern. In each team, hockey players from different countries - 11 field players and two goalkeepers. The strongest teams will go to the playoffs and play medals.
In the classic hockey tournament, six teams will compete for victory, who will be selected for the games according to the results of the world junior championships, which will be held in 2018 and 2019. The men's and women's teams, which received the highest rating at the end of these championships, will be able to come to Lausanne.
Russia at the winter youth games
Russian athletes again have good chances to compete for high places in the team event - this is evidenced by the successful experience of past years. During the first competitions of 2012, our team ranked fifth with 5 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze medals. In terms of the total number of awards (16), she lost only to Germany, which won 17 medals.
Four years later, young athletes from the Russian Federation closed the top three teams in the team event with 7 gold, 8 silver and 9 bronze awards. By the total number of medals (24), then the Russians were not equal at all.
Tournament Legacy
The organizers of the games promised to leave a large inheritance for Lausanne and the whole of Switzerland, starting with an increase in the student housing area thanks to the construction of a dormitory for 1200 people and ending with stadiums and training bases. The Espase Malley ice rink for 9700 spectators will become a real decoration of the city, where young skaters and skaters will later engage in. Mountain resorts will be able to strengthen their position as key centers of winter sports.
