The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation approached the line of plans outlined in 2012 for the modernization and arming of Russia until 2020. The main task of the Ministry of Defense was to introduce new weapons and reach 67% of the level of equipped with modern weapons and technical equipment. In general, the plans were successfully implemented, and high performance in the development of precision weapons was achieved, as evidenced by successful tests in Syria.
Results Achieved
According to Defense Minister Shoigu, the Russian army has significantly strengthened its defenses. Russia will enter the new decade with new forces, replenishing its arsenal of weapons.
Over the past 6 years, the Arsenal of the RF Armed Forces has received:
- 109 Yars intercontinental missiles;
- 108 ballistic missiles for arming submarines;
- 3 submarine missile cruisers Borey;
- 57 space satellites;
- 7 modern submarines;
- 17 missile systems of the coast guard Bal and Bastion;
- more than 3,500 units new and improved armored vehicles;
- more than 1,000 aircraft and helicopters;
- 161 surface ships.
As a result, 12 missile regiments were upgraded to the Yars complex, 10 missile brigades to the Iskander complex, 13 aviation regiments received upgraded 4 ++ MiG-31BM, Su-35S, Su-30SM and Su-34 aircraft, 3 army aviation brigades and 6 helicopter regiments - Ka-52 and Mi-28 helicopters, 20 anti-aircraft missile regiments are now armed with S-400 air defense systems.
New weapons
Continued modernization of the army from 2018 to 2027 provides for the conclusion of new contracts for the supply of the latest weapons, most of which have no world analogues. Moreover, from the beginning of the program, most of the contracts for new weapons in Russia have already been concluded and even the first deliveries have been made. Some types of weapons are in the final stages of development and will be supplied to the armed forces in 2020.
Vanguard
This is the latest global range missile system, which is now at the testing stage. The hypersonic intercontinental ballistic missile showed a record speed, which is 27 times the speed of sound. According to experts, at this speed, no missile can shoot down a missile. In addition, a missile approaching a target can maneuver along the course and pitch, which further complicates the missile defense.
The first serial deliveries of Avangard complexes are planned to begin at the end of 2019 in the Dombarovsk compound of the Orenburg region and continue to arm the other regions of Russia with avant-garde in 2020. In addition, next year it is also planned to supply 31 Yars installations in the mine and mobile versions.
S-500
The development of the S-500 anti-aircraft missile system has already been completed. Now the air defense system is at the test stage. The Ministry of Industry and Trade confirmed that the tests are in the final stages and in 2020 the complex will go into service.
S-500 Prometheus is a 5th generation weapon. An ultra-long hypersonic missile is capable of hitting targets at an altitude of 250 km and can be used to intercept intercontinental ballistic missiles and satellites in low orbit. Prometheus is also the only installation in the world capable of intercepting hypersonic targets.
No less striking are the capabilities of the S-500 air defense system.Only one complex is capable of simultaneously leading and intercepting 10 targets. In this case, the system automatically determines the type of target and selects a missile to intercept it. Today, Prometheus is the most resonant project, causing great interest among the Russian military and deep concern abroad.
Strengthening aerospace forces
The VKS this year will include 4 Tu-95MS missile carriers. As a result of modernization, the aircraft was equipped with suspensions for high-precision missiles X-101, successfully used in Syria. The control system was also reconstructed, which allows to increase maneuverability.
The most significant event in 2020 in Russian military aviation will most likely be the serial deliveries of 50th generation Su-57 fighters, the characteristics of which are not yet advertised. In addition, the army will receive Mi-28MN attack helicopters and the first 2 Mi-38T transport and assault helicopters. In the future, a contract for the supply of heavy modernized Mi-26T2V helicopters is being considered.
Until the end of 2019, military aviation will also receive 2 Il-22M11 control and relay aircraft, and in 2020 another 5 such aircraft will be put into service.
Night Hunter
This all-weather attack helicopter Mi-28NM is already in production. The first deliveries are planned in 2020. The contract was concluded for the supply of 98 rotary-wing aircraft until 2027. The advanced new-generation night hunter helicopter is designed to destroy enemy armored vehicles and is equipped with the new Chrysanthem-M anti-tank missiles and a modern airborne defense complex.
The engine, airborne systems were modernized and a new all-round radar was installed. The main advantage of the helicopter was the ability to conduct targeted fire at targets at a distance of 10 km or more, to quickly receive information about the combat situation using the new radar.
Heavy Impact Drone
So far, there is only an experimental version, but its first flights produced a deep resonance in the circles of military specialists. An unmanned aerial vehicle was developed at the Sukhov Design Bureau. The weight of the drone is about 20 tons. It is noted that the device will be able to carry high-precision bombs over long distances and pass the enemy’s air defense systems unnoticed. The “Hunter,” as its developers called it, was created with the aim of striking at well-defended enemy targets, primarily against air defense systems.
Everyone can see the “Hunter” and even touch it by visiting the exhibition at the Kubinka airfield from June 25 to 30 of this year. In the Russian defense industry, the project is considered quite promising and there is a high probability of concluding a manufacturers' contract with the Ministry of Defense for the supply of Okhotnik for the VKS.
Fleet
Among the many "new products", the new atomic submarine "Kazan" is of greatest interest, which, after demagnetization, will go to sea in July this summer. Tests of the submarine are planned to be completed before the end of this year, and in 2020 put it on combat duty of the Northern Fleet.
Kazan is an improved project 885M Yasen-M. The submarine is characterized by reduced engine noise, therefore it is practically not noticeable for detection. More detailed information about the armament of the submarine remains classified.
Small arms and equipment from the Kalashnikov concern
The Kalashnikov Concern presented a new development strategy for 2020. Now the developers of the concern are working on more than 30 projects, which include not only weapons, but also equipment, as well as light transport equipment. Among the finished projects that have passed the tests, one can single out the RPK-16 machine gun and the Boa constrictor pistol. A modern Kalashnikov light machine gun can fire ammunition from a regular AK store, as well as from a specially designed drum with extended ammunition.The machine gun weighs only 4.5 kg, and the rate of fire is 700 rounds per minute.
Self-loading pistol "Boa" 9 mm caliber became a real contender for the replacement of the "immortal" PM. The pistol has a clip of 18 rounds, which is 10 more than that of a Makarov pistol. A special subsonic cartridge has also been developed for the new pistol, which allows firing almost silently with high penetration ability.
According to the results of state tests, "Boa constrictor" showed excellent tactical characteristics, reliability and stable operation at temperatures from -70 to +50 ° C.
