Russia group on Euro 2020 football

The European Football Championship is a grand event that is held by UEFA once every 4 years (excluding the qualifying tournament) between the FIFA World Cups. The main qualification process, including qualifying tournaments to determine the 24 national teams that will take part in the final round of the competition, is held from March 21 to November 19, 2019. 55 teams will take part in the Qualifying Competition. According to the results of the selection among the groups of applicants, the countries that will take part in the UEFA Nations League will be determined: the fate of Russia will also be decided at EURO 2020 in football.

Tournament format

Qualifying competitions determine the final composition of the participants, incl. Russian group at Euro 2020 football. The groups are formed by the draw procedure carried out by the UEFA committee with the so-called "sowing". Sowing is carried out according to the results of the qualification round for the World Cup and according to past competitions. Despite the fact that the teams did not receive the automatic right to enter the European Championship finals for the first time in the past 43 years (due to the participation of 12 football associations at once in the tournament), the format of the event will remain basically the same.

Only 20 of the available 24 places of the championship finals will be determined during the main selection of participants. The remaining four places will play in the League of Nations in the format of “playoffs” among 16 leaders of the qualifying stage. Thus, applicants will be able to get to the final tournament only if they successfully pass the qualifying competitions or the League of Nations.

The Russian team became the second in its group under number I: to get to the EURO 2020, athletes need to give all the best in the classic selection. Roughly speaking, the Russian team needs to become the first or second in the group among such rivals as:

  • Belgium;
  • Scotland;
  • Cyprus;
  • Kazakhstan;
  • San Marino

However, Russia lost to Belgium at the start of the Euro 2020 qualifying round in Brussels with a score of 3: 1. On March 24, Russia beat Kazakhstan with a score of 0: 4.

As a result, the table of group I according to the results of the match 24.03. has the following form:

But even if Russia does not qualify for the Euro 2020 Championship and becomes a champion in its group, the country will still have a chance to win one of the 4 “bonus” competitions within the framework of the League of Nations tournament, which will be held in March 20th. There is still the opportunity to play in the playoffs. In the event that 9 out of 12 teams of Special Division A will pass qualifying competitions, and 3 of them will play “badly”, their 4th rival will be Russia - representative of Division B.
