The presidential New Year’s address, which is expected in 2020 by residents of many countries, is a fairly young tradition. Presidents and other dignitaries in the USA and North Korea, Germany and Austria, Ukraine and Belarus congratulate people on television.

In the following years, not all leaders supported the tradition, and from the end of the 70s, the announcement on behalf of the leadership on December 31 was read out by announcer Igor Kirilov.
The first video message in the USSR was shown on television on December 31, 1982 - 81-year-old V.V. Kuznetsov congratulated the people. - The record number of congratulations belongs to the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko.
- In 1986, the inhabitants of Germany witnessed a curiosity - on the central TV channel they showed last year's appeal of Helmut Kohl. The error was corrected the very next day, starting the broadcast with a new speech on January 1.
- In 1991, the famous comedian Mikhail Zadornov congratulated the Russians on the New Year. Due to the fact that he did not meet the allotted time for the speech, the chime of the chimes across the country sounded 1 minute later than expected.
- In 2000, two congratulations sounded at once in Russia - from Boris Yeltsin, who was leaving the post, and also from his successor Vladimir Putin.
