For more than 15 years, there has been a tradition in the last minutes of the year to watch the New Year’s address of the President of Russia, and the New Year’s Eve in 2020 will not be an exception - find out what the solemn speech of Vladimir Putin will be about this time.
The video of the President’s New Year’s speech can also be watched on December 31 by visiting our website 10 minutes before the New Year.
The tradition of New Year's appeal to the people
The presidential New Year’s address, which is expected in 2020 by residents of many countries, is a fairly young tradition. Presidents and other dignitaries in the USA and North Korea, Germany and Austria, Ukraine and Belarus congratulate people on television.
In countries where the monarchy is still preserved, New Year's speech is recorded by kings and queens. For example, in the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth II annually congratulates the subjects, but unlike our presidential, this video is broadcast on Christmas Day.
The history of the people’s congratulations from the top leadership in Russia and other post-Soviet countries goes back to the USSR period. On the eve of 1936, M. I. Kalinin recorded the radio for the first time to the polar explorers, congratulating them on the New Year, and on December 31, 1941, he addressed all the people of the USSR by radio. In the following years, not all leaders supported the tradition, and from the end of the 70s, the announcement on behalf of the leadership on December 31 was read out by announcer Igor Kirilov.
The first video message in the USSR was shown on television on December 31, 1982 - 81-year-old V.V. Kuznetsov congratulated the people. It is this congratulation that can be considered the beginning of a tradition which, in 2020, the current head of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, adheres to.
How and when to record video
Naturally, presidents, chancellors and queens prefer to celebrate holidays with their families, and the New Year’s address to the people is recorded in advance, and 2020 will not be an exception.
A whole team of specialists works on the choice of location and presentation format, as in other matters and on any other presentation or press conference of the country's leadership. Although, the opinion of the speaker himself is naturally taken into account. So, if in many countries the result of an attempt by the creative of media teams was the performance of the presidents in the family circle and even in the arms with pets, then Vladimir Putin’s New Year’s videos are always official.
According to established tradition, the President’s monologue includes:
- summing up the outgoing year;
- analysis of achievements in the fields of economics, social policy, science, sports;
- brief familiarization of the people with the upcoming reforms;
- New Year's greetings themselves.
In Russia, over the years, the shooting of the New Year’s greetings from the President has been carried out by Channel One (formerly ORT). All channels broadcast a single video, but taking into account regional time. So, the appeal begins traditionally on December 31 at 23:55. Although, if the President’s speech takes more than 4 minutes, the start of the broadcast can be shifted so that the speech ends exactly 1 minute before midnight. The last minute of the outgoing year is intended for the chiming clock, and in the first minute of the new year a hymn sounds.
