The KHL (Continental Hockey League) stars match is an annual friendly game in which the most powerful and famous hockey players participate.
Basic information
It was first held in the 2008/2009 season on Red Square in Moscow. In 2010, the format of the match was slightly modified - now it is a confrontation between the Western and Eastern conferences. The command structure is determined by voting, which is posted on the match website. Thus, several groups form it: 1/3 are chosen by the fans of the teams, 1/3 are chosen by the journalists and 1/3 are chosen by the League itself. Accordingly, new teams are composed for each championship.
The shape of the athletes, which the League develops every year, also changes. Since 2017, the divisions into which the Western and Eastern conferences are divided are introduced into the game format.
12 The KHL stars match of 2020 will take place, traditionally at the beginning of the year, namely, the weekend of January 18-19, 2020.
The competition will be held according to the rules that were updated and established in 2017:
- 5x5 mini-tournament will take place.
- During the semi-finals, the teams of two conferences will meet: Western and Eastern. The winners of the matches reach the final, where they will fight for the victory, and the losing teams - for the third place.
- Each match lasts 20 minutes.
- After 10 minutes, the gate is exchanged.
- If the game ends in a draw, then a series of shootouts is appointed, at the end of which a winner will be determined.

The Western Conference is divided into two parts: the Tarasov Division and the Bobrov Division. In the Bobrov Division we observe the following teams:

Also, Slovan (Bratislava, Slovakia) will not participate in this championship. According to some sources, the refusal to participate was due to financial difficulties.
Where will the KHL stars 2020 match take place?
The event venue has already been selected. The initial version, according to rumors, was the city of St. Petersburg, but then they changed their minds.
As one member of the board of directors said, he is also the former head of the League, Alexander Medvedev, the competition will be held in Moscow at Dynamo’s home stadium VTB Arena. In this huge complex is not only a hockey, but also a football arena.In a conversation, A. Medvedev specified that the hockey arena is in excellent condition, so you should not worry about the level of the game. He also gave a justification for choosing the place where the KHL Stars match of 2020 will be. According to him, several factors served as the reason for this:
- developed infrastructure of the city;
- worthy arena;
- financial side;
- understanding administration.
Logistics became an additional factor, as transporting the tournament participants is not a problem. Another plus is the lack of a large time difference.
The match of stars is a holiday for fans
According to Medvedev, the week of stars promises to be boring for residents and guests of the capital, as the League promises to bring a real bright holiday to the city.
However, Alexander Kozhevnikov (Olympic champion) made his statement. He considers it incomprehensible the choice of Moscow for hosting the KHL Stars Match 2020. Alexander said that the Muscovites holiday will not be interesting enough, because in the city there is enough hockey. He suggested bringing children from orphanages who love this sport, because they do not have the opportunity to attend championships of this level. In his opinion, it is advisable to hold the Match of the stars in smaller cities that are not so saturated with events related to hockey.
