When children go to school in January 2020

General educational institutions adhere to the norms of the duration of school holidays recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia. According to these recommendations, winter holidays for students last two weeks, but their start and end dates may shift. It is important for parents to know when to go to school after the winter holidays in order to plan family vacations in advance in 2020.

Training systems

School education in Russia is of several types:

1. Traditional learning. Includes 4 quarters lasting 8.7, 11 and 7 weeks, respectively. At the end of each quarter, students go on vacation.
2. Trimester system. The academic year consists of 3 trimesters lasting 3 months each. After the first and second trimesters - autumn and spring holidays lasting 17-18 days and summer, the longest. This scheme is rarely practiced.
3. Modular system. Consists of six educational segments of 5 weeks each. After each - a week break.

The exact date when children need to return to school after the New Year holidays depends on the scheme practiced in a particular educational institution.

Traditional learning

The exact schedule of the beginning and end of the New Year holidays for children who study in quarters will be known in August 2019, closer to the beginning of the new school year. Presumably the winter holidays will begin on December 26 and will last until Wednesday, January 8, 2020. A new quarter for students will begin on Thursday, January 9th.

The option of extended vacations is not excluded - until January 12 inclusive. This is due to the possible transfer of holidays on January 4 and 5, coinciding with the weekend, on working Thursday and Friday - January 9-10. If the government decides and prolongs the holiday, the students will sit at their desks only on Monday, January 13th.

Modular system

In general education institutions working on a modular system, the next stage of training will end on December 25th - from the 26th, schoolchildren will begin winter holidays.

It will last 14 days, as recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia - until January 8, inclusive. In this case, the first school week will last only 2 days - January 9-10, after which the students will receive two more days off - Saturday and Sunday - and calmly, without stress, immerse themselves in the educational process.

If the Russian government extends New Year's holidays until the 12th day, the winter holidays will last 18 days, and the first school day will be Monday, January 13th.

There are educational institutions in which the academic year lasts 10 months and is divided into 5 equivalent periods of study. There are also 5 vacation modules - they basically coincide with traditional holidays.

One of these institutions is the Pavlovsk Gymnasium in the Moscow Region. According to the 2019-2020 study schedule, the winter holidays will begin on December 28 and end on January 12. The first school day is Monday, 13th.

Trimester system

In educational institutions practicing trimester studies, students sit at their desks after the New Year holidays on the same days as students of the modular and classical system - January 9 or 13, 2020.

Winter holidays for this group will begin on December 28 (if the children are in a five-day school week) or December 29 (for a six-day week). The total duration of the trimester holidays will be less than in regular schools.

Extra rest for first grades

First graders leave twice for the winter holidays. In schools with a modular education system, additional rest for them is planned from February 24 to March 1 inclusive. They will return to training classes on March 2.

In general education institutions with a traditional educational process organization system, additional holidays are provided from February 15 to February 24 inclusive. The educational process for 1st grade students will resume on February 25.

The dates in the schedule are not final - the exact schedule is drawn up closer to the beginning of the new school year, approved by the school order and certified by the director's signature. According to the current Law on Education, administrations of educational institutions have the right to shift dates, but no more than two weeks. This is done for the convenience of children, so that the holidays do not begin on weekends or holidays.
