Carnival in Venice in 2020

Carnival of Venice in 2020: dates

At least half a million tourists come to the carnival in Venice every year, so those who wish to attend the ceremony in 2020 will specify the dates in advance. The fact is that accommodation, tables in cafes and tickets for the show need to be booked for several months. Before the carnival, there are practically no empty seats, and prices soar quite high.

When will be held

The Venice Carnival is held annually on different dates. This is due to the binding to the Catholic Easter, which, as you know, does not have a fixed date. Solemn events, during which locals and tourists put on beautiful costumes and put on masks, begin a little more than two weeks before Lent. The opening of the carnival always falls on Saturday. Final contests, awards and concerts are held on the so-called Fat Tuesday - the last day before fasting, when you can have plenty of goodies and have fun, not to indulge in carnal and spiritual joys. Festivities continue until midnight. With the ringing of bells, all entertainment events cease.

Important! In 2020, the Venice Carnival will be held from February 8 to 25 (inclusive).

Tourists who want to attend the Rio de Janeiro Carnival in 2020 should know that its dates partially coincide with the holiday in Venice. In Brazil, incendiary dances in fancy dress and revealing costumes, as well as competitions and processions along the streets of the city, will be held from February 22 to 25.

Venice Carnival

Appearance story

The history of the Venice Carnival dates back almost a millennium. The first mention of it dates back to 1094, although large-scale celebrations were first held in 1162. They were dedicated to the victory over the patriarch Aquileia. Since then, they began to be held annually.

Nowadays, the main attribute of the carnival is the Venetian mask. According to historical data, it began to be used not immediately, but approximately in the XIII-XIV century. Initially, the mask was used for one purpose - to achieve social equality. After all, the faces were hiding, so it was not clear where the rich were and where the poor were. For the manufacture of masks used simple and affordable materials - paper and gypsum. They were painted with paints. Now they are made of leather and other expensive materials, hand-painted by famous masters. Such work is expensive. Sometimes the price reaches several thousand dollars, although cheap analogs are also sold on the streets of Venice.

Over time, the black cloaks that the participants in the festivities put on were replaced by lush and luxurious outfits. In 1979, the carnival acquired the status of an official holiday. In 1996, another important event occurred - the famous fashion designer Pierre Cardin wrote the anthem, which now sounds annually at the opening of the event.

Interesting fact! At the beginning of the 18th century, the government forbade wearing masks outside the days of the carnival. This decision was caused by an increase in crimes that were committed using masks. Although only a year later the decision was canceled.

Activities and program

Even knowing the dates of the carnival in Venice in 2020, travelers should familiarize themselves with the program in advance in order to properly plan their time and make the rest as intense as possible. The following events are held annually as part of the festivities:

  • La Festa Veneziana. The grand opening of the carnival will take place on Saturday, February 8th. On this day, a large-scale celebration of La Festa Veneziana is organized. Its main feature is that guests are showered with confetti. It is believed that bright multi-colored pieces of paper bring happiness to those present.
  • Water parade. On Sunday, February 9, La Festa Veneziana will continue, but its main actions from land will move to the water surface. A parade of celebratory boats will take place on the central channel.

  • Festa delle Marie. A procession in which 12 girls from different parts of Venice participate. Participants are usually determined by a special jury a week before the event. Among the girls choose the winner, who will participate in the "Flight of the angel" at the next festival.
  • "Flight of the angel." An incredibly beautiful event, the essence of which is that the winner of the previous parade in a snow-white carnival outfit is lowered on belts from a 100-meter height. The spectacle captivates the audience.
  • Competition of masks and costumes. It is usually held in the last days of the carnival. Everyone can participate in it. The only condition is to have a mask and appropriate outfit. And although in Venice you can rent a suit, you should think about the outfit in advance, since the rental price will be quite high.
  • Parade of costumes. Finishes the carnival. The streets of Venice are marched by locals and travelers in incredible outfits. The parade is accompanied by fun music and dancing.

As part of the entertainment program, other flights are also organized. For example, Flight of the Donkey is a parody of Flight of the Angel. The soaring eagle symbolizes tightrope walkers. The name of the hero remains a secret to the last. "Flight of the Lion" is the raising of the flag of the city.

Many carnival events take place on the streets and canals of Venice. You can watch them for free. During festivities in houses of culture, theaters and other entertainment venues show shows, theater performances, etc. The cost of a ticket depends on the program and institution and ranges from 50 to 500 euros.
