Eurovision 2020

Eurovision Song Contest 2020

In mid-May of this year, the name of the winner of Eurovision 2019, held in Tel Aviv, became known - he was 25-year-old Duncan Lawrence, who performed the song Arcade. Having relied solely on the song and abandoning the show, which EB participants usually like to pamper the audience, Lawrence brought victory to his native Netherlands. This means that Eurovision in 2020 will take place there. Already, the main world music contest is overgrown with rumors and assumptions about possible participants, dates and venue.

When will the EB-2020 take place

The victory of 25-year-old Duncan Lawrence became the fifth in the history of the Netherlands during his participation in Eurovision. The last time the Dutch hosted the contestants in 1976.

There are no officially confirmed dates for Eurovision 2020. The most probable are called May 12-14-16, although the periods from April 28 to May 2 and from May 26 to May 30 are not excluded. The final decision may be affected by some events:

  • Holiday on the occasion of the liberation of the Netherlands. Celebrate it on May 5, and it is likely that the song contest can coincide with the celebration.
  • UEFA Champions League. The semi-final is scheduled for April 28-29 and May 5-6, the final will be on May 30, 2020.
  • UEFA Europa League. The semi-finals are scheduled for April 30 and May 7, 2020.
  • German soccer cup. The final is due on May 23rd.
  • Formula 1 (Grand Prix of Holland). The exact date is currently unknown, but the event is likely to take place in early May.

The exact dates for Eurovision 2020, the organizers promise to submit to the public in August 2019.

Where will the contest take place

It is not yet possible to say exactly where Eurovision 2020 will take place, however, the official website of the International Song Contest has a list of candidate cities. Negotiations regarding the venue have already begun with three Dutch broadcasters, the organizers of the competition - Avrotros, NPO and NOS.

It is known that already at the beginning of June of the current year, Dutch cities interested in accepting participants in the EB became the owners of a number of criteria necessary for holding an international competition. Now everyone must argue their own willingness to act as the host of the event.

It is also known that in mid-July 2019, the organizers will make a tour of the cities that have submitted applications. And after negotiations with the European Broadcasting Union and consideration of all proposals, the exact place where Eurovision 2020 will be held will be determined.

Amsterdam

Another European capital would be an obvious venue for an international song contest. The Ziggo Dome entertainment complex began operating in 2012 and has since been considered a popular venue for artists to perform. He is able to accommodate about 17 thousand people - in the stands of the upper tiers and in the stalls.

The arena of the complex, which is deservedly called the best sound platform of the Netherlands, guarantees the absorption of the crowd rumble, that is, music from the stage easily “reaches” each spectator. In the lobby of the complex there are enough cells for storing clothes, the territory is replete with cafeterias, and the signs allow you to easily find your place, avoiding crowding.

Rotterdam

The second largest city in the Netherlands is not inferior to Amsterdam in hospitality and the ability to organize a decent base for Eurovision 2020. Expocentre Ahoy Arena with a capacity of 15 thousandpeople have already proved their suitability for large-scale events (in 2007, the Children’s EV contest was held here). In addition to the main hall, there are two less spacious ones - up to 6 and 4 thousand people.

Ahoy Arena is an ideal venue for Eurovision 2020 also because it has a flexible layout, the latest technical facilities, step-by-step access to public transport stops and its own ample parking.

Hague

The third largest city in the Netherlands has the ADO Den Haag Stadium. Capacity - 15 thousand people. ADO Den Haag Stadium has the best security system in Europe: the stadium has a large number of video cameras recording several images of each viewer, as well as a recording system at the entrance. The downside is the lack of a roof. If you want to become the masters of the EB in 2020, the authorities will have to resolve this issue as soon as possible.

The replacement version of The Hague is World Forum Den Haag. The congress center and the theater can not accommodate more than 5 thousand people, but it has its own hotel and public transport stops within walking distance. In addition, in 1976 Eurovision was held here.

Arnhem

Arnhem, through which the river Rhine flows, is located near the German border. Eurovision 2020 venue under review is GelreDome Arnhem. The football stadium is impressive in size and can accommodate about 40 thousand people. During its existence GelreDome Arnhem managed to become the venue for many football matches and performances by foreign artists.

Maastricht

MECC Maastricht - the exhibition and conference center of the city, located near the border with Belgium, is divided into 4 rooms. The largest can accommodate 5 thousand spectators. In Maastrich itself there are a lot of upscale hotels oriented to demanding tourists and restaurants of national cuisine.

To date, 28 countries, including Russia, have confirmed their participation in the international song contest. Among those who did not confirm participation in Eurovision 2020 are Greece, Italy, Azerbaijan, Great Britain, Poland, Moldova, Croatia, Israel, Ireland and Slovenia.

Andorra and Slovakia officially confirmed their refusal to participate in the competition. It is also quite possible that at Eurovision 2020, viewers will not see Turkey and Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the first case, the decision was dictated by the unwillingness of the authorities to take part in the competition, the participants of which are “sexually ambiguous artists”, the second of which is mainly material problems.

After a year-long break, Ukraine, due to the lack of agreement between singer Maruv and the national broadcaster, as well as excessive politicization during the national selection, again announced its decision to return to Eurovision in 2020.

During the Eurovision Song Contest of 2019, the Chairman of the National Television Broadcasting Board of Ukraine said that the representative of the country would not participate in the 2020 contest if it takes place in Russia.

Also, Luxenburg, which has not participated since 1993, and Monaco can return to the EB stage in 2020. There are chances for a debut in the Eurovision 2020 of Kazakhstan. This was stated by the chairman of the Agency Khabar.

The status of Bulgaria and Iceland, which announced a possible return to the EB scene in the coming years, remains completely unclear.

Who will go from Russia

In 2019, Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest was presented by Sergey Lazarev, who brought the honorable 3rd place to the Russian Federation. At the moment, it’s too early to say with certainty who will go to Eurovision 2020 from Russia, but rumors are circulating in the Internet about the possible choice of Olga Buzova’s candidacy.

Agent of 33-year-old Buzova Anton Bogoslovsky said that Olga is really ready to participate in ЕВ 2020, if she receives a proposal. On her Instagram page, the singer not only expressed her desire to represent Russia at the international competition in 2020, but also offered to sing a duet to Philip Kirkorov. He, in turn, is ready to support the singer, escorting her to the Netherlands. At the same time, the singer noted that possible participants from Russia do not download to Buzova and the country has no less vivid contender - singer Zivert, who won the Breakthrough of the Year nomination.

Participants from other countries have not yet been disclosed. Especially controversial in view of recent events is the situation with applicants from Ukraine: who will represent the country at the EB in 2020 do not yet represent even ardent fans of the international competition.

Eurovision 2020 continues to grow into rumors. But there is no doubt that the 65th international song contest will be no less grandiose and exciting than its predecessors.
