Tournament Regulations

The 2019-2020 Grand Prix of Figure Skating consists of six stages. At each of them, in their discipline (women's single skating, men's single skating, pair skating and ice dancing), 12 athletes (pairs) will perform. It is noteworthy that the athletes who took the first six lines in the final protocol at the 2018 World Cup automatically get the right to speak in two stages. The remaining quotas are allocated according to the rating. At what exactly stage the athletes will participate, will be decided by drawing lots.

Ice dancing

Depending on the people employed at the stages of the seats, athletes are awarded a certain number of points. For male and female single skating, the system is as follows: 1st place - 15 points; 2nd place - 13, third - 11, etc. Only the first eight figure skaters get points. In paired competitions, points are awarded only to the first six places: 15 points for the first place, 13 - for the second, 11 - for the third, etc. At the end of the six stages of the tournament, the points accumulated are counted, and the eight best athletes go to the Grand Prix finals.

Women's single skating

In women's single skating, competition in 2019-2020 will reach its peak. A few more skaters can join the sensational confrontation between Alina Zagitova and Evgenia Medvedeva. It is, first of all, about the young galaxy of "stars" grown by Eteri Tutberidze - Alexander Trusova (winner of the youth World Cup), Alena Kastornaya, Anna Shcherbakova. Add here Sofya Samodurova, who skated the most stable last season, Elizabeth Tursynbaeva, who performed the fourth lutz for the first time among girls, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, who delights the audience with frank rentals, and we get an explosive mixture of candidates for victory.

It should be noted that in the women's single skating competition only the Japanese Rika Kihira can compete with Russians, however she stably acts only in front of her audience. Caitlin Osmond, who, having failed last season, will surely want to rehabilitate herself and, according to rumors, is preparing a complicated program, is also worth fearing. In any case, in women's single skating in 2019-2020, it will not be boring.

Men's single skating

Unfortunately, Russia has not occupied high places in men's single skating for a long time. Athletes who qualify for the Grand Prix finals can be counted on the fingers.Among them:

  • Mikhail Kolyada;
  • Maxim Kovtun;
  • Alexander Samarin.

Perhaps Mikhail Kolyada has the best chance of winning at least at one stage, but for this he needs to cope with excitement. It’s no secret that at the important starts of the past season Mikhail openly “sailed”, making serious mistakes and unfortunate falls. So, for example, it was at the 2018 World Cup, when Kolyada took only sixth place. Maxim Kovtun and Alexander Samarin are more stable in this regard, but the hopping arsenal does not yet allow them to claim high places.

The main battle in the men's grand prix will unfold between Shomo Uno and Nathan Chen. At the moment, these are the best skaters on the planet, and if none of them are covered by a series of injuries, then the audience will fully enjoy their epic confrontation.

Pair skating

In pair skating in Russia, everything is not as bad as in men's single. The best results in the past season belong to the duets Evgenia Tarasova / Vladimir Morozov and Natalia Zabiyako / Alexander Enbert. They took second and third places respectively at the World Cup in Japanese Saitama. The Chinese pair Sui Wenjing / Han Tsun excelled with the world record. With some progress, the Russians have a chance to compete for the championship at a separate stage. Nevertheless, the main struggle will unfold in the Grand Prix finals, where in order to win gold our couples will have to make every effort to defeat the Chinese.

Dancing on Ice

In ice dancing, the greatest chance of a pedestal has a Russian couple Ekaterina Bobrova / Dmitry Soloviev. Another claimant to high places from Russia is Alexander Stepanova / Ivan Bukin. Last season, athletes did not miss the stars from the sky, limiting themselves to modest results. In the upcoming Grand Prix, you must give everything 100%, otherwise the Americans (Madison Hubbell / Zachary Donoghue) and Canadians (Tessa Virtue / Scott Moir) will not leave a chance to win.

Thus, at a meeting of the International Association of Skaters (ISU), it was decided when and where the 2019-2020 Figure Skating Grand Prix will be held. From October to December, the fans of the most spectacular sport are waiting for six stages and the final in Strasbourg. Russia has excellent chances for medals, especially in women's single and doubles skating.
