In the summer of 2020, the 16th European Football Championship starts. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the organization of the tournament, the UEFA Executive Committee decided to change the usual format. For the first time, the UEFA European Championships will be hosted by UEFA national associations from 12 countries. The ceremony of announcing the cities where the Euro 2020 football matches will be held took place on September 19, 2014 in Geneva (Switzerland).
Requirements for Applicants
The decision to change the usual rules of the championship was made back in 2012.
Important! UEFA representatives emphasized that this is a one-time action related to a significant event. Subsequent championships will have the usual format.
The following requirements were made to applicants:
- each country indicates no more than 2 cities (1 for a standard and final package);
- a prerequisite is the presence in each of them of an airport with 2 terminals;
- the stadium must accommodate at least the specified number of seats (50,000 - 1/8 finals and group meetings, 60,000 - quarter-finals, 70,000 - semi-finals / finals).
If there is no arena, then construction should begin no later than 4 years before the start of the European Championship 2020. Acceptance of applications started on May 15, 2012. In the very first days, several countries showed interest at once; by September 20, 2013, 32 associations had applied. Cities claimed to hold games in packages:
- group stage, quarter finals;
- semifinals and finals.
Some of the applicants refused to participate or were eliminated by the UEFA Executive Committee. By April 2014, 19 participating countries remained. National associations were chosen taking into account the fact that football battles should take place throughout Europe - 2 cities entered each of the regional zones. September 19, the results were announced.
