Location

4 countries applied for the World Hockey Championship in 2020 - Switzerland, Latvia, Belarus and Finland. The venue for the 84th World Ice Hockey Championship was selected on May 15, 2015 in the Czech Republic. Thanks to all the necessary infrastructure, Switzerland was initially considered the main contender for the reception of world championship. In addition, this country has already had successful experience in holding this tournament in 2009. It is worth noting that then the games were held in the capital of Bern and Kloten. Interestingly, the winner of that tournament was the Russian team.

As a result, the International Ice Hockey Federation has not cheated a single challenger. The 2020 world hockey championship will be held in Switzerland, the World Cup 2021 in Finland, the World Cup 2022 in Belarus and Latvia.

For Switzerland, the upcoming world championship in hockey will be the 11th in history. This country is a champion (along with Sweden) in the number of championships accepted.

Ice arenas

The main arena of the world championship will be the multifunctional sports palace in Zurich. The Hallenstadion Arena was built back in 1939. In 2005, it was reconstructed. After renovation, the Hallenstadion seats 11,200 spectators. This arena is home to the club CSK Lyons.

For Hallestdion, which will host the 2020 World Hockey Finals, the upcoming world championships will not be the first. This sports palace hosted the best hockey teams back in 1998. The matches of the 2011 Women's Hockey World Championship and the 2006 European Handball Championship were also held at this arena.

The ice arena in Lausanne, where the 2020 World Hockey Championship will be held, has not yet been built. Its opening is scheduled for 2019. Its capacity will be 10 thousand spectators.

Ice hockey arena

Interesting! The multifunctional sports palace in Lausanne in 2020 will host not only the World Hockey Championship, but also the Winter Youth Olympic Games.

Members

At the upcoming world championship 16 best teams will participate. The composition will be determined by the results of the 2019 World Cup in Slovakia. At the moment, participation in this tournament is guaranteed only to the host country - Switzerland. But experts predict that the 2020 World Hockey Championship will not be possible without the best national teams of our time - the teams of Canada, Russia, Sweden, Finland, the USA and the Czech Republic. The teams of Austria, Slovakia, Great Britain, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Latvia, Italy and France also want to take part. In addition, 6 teams of the first division claim to 2 places - Kazakhstan, Belarus, South Korea, Hungary, Slovenia and Lithuania.

Favorites

The group of favorites for the upcoming tournament is obvious. The best chances to win are the national teams of Canada and Sweden. Only these teams over the past 4 years have become world champions. The Russian team, which, if you take into account the championships of the USSR national team, should not be deleted from the list, is considered the most titled team in the world. On the account of the Russian (Soviet) national team 27 championship titles. One less from Canada.

The surprise may be presented by the hosts of the championship. In 2018, the Swiss team quite unexpectedly reached the final of the world championship, where they lost to the Swedes. Thus, the second place is the highest achievement of the Swiss team in the hockey World Cup.

Switzerland hockey team

Switzerland hockey team

Already today we can say that the world championship in Switzerland does not count many star players. This is due to the fact that the 2020 World Cup is also planned. The timing of this tournament is still unknown, but we can say for sure that the 2020 ice hockey world cup is quoted higher than the World Cup. This is due to the fact that this tournament is held once every 4 years. In addition, only 6 of the best teams in the world take part in it - Canada, Russia, the USA, Finland, Sweden and the Czech Republic. The teams of Europe and North America will also take part in the World Cup. The current winner of this tournament is Canada, which defeated the European team in the 2016 final.

Main stars

Despite the fact that the World Cup will be a serious competition, the World Cup in Switzerland will also not do without star players. Today in the main hockey league of the world, several Swiss are at the forefront at once - Roman Yosi and Kevin Fiala from Nashville, Mirko Muller from New Jersey, Timo Meyer from San Jose and Nino Niederreiter from Minnesota.

The main stars of the Russian team playing in the KHL will certainly come to Switzerland. These are Kirill Kaprizov, Nikita Gusev, Vasily Koshechkin Maxim Shalunov, Nikita Nesterov, Victor Antipin, Mikhail Grigorenko and others. We should also count on the arrival of Alexander Ovechkin, Artemy Panarin, Evgeni Malkin, Evgeni Dadonov and many others.

Hockey

Team Canada will also please. At the latest world championships, the Canadian team was represented by such hockey players as Connor McDavid, Ryan O’Riley, Colton Paraiko, Brendan Shann, Jordan Eberle and Aaron Ekblad. We should not exclude the possibility of the arrival in Switzerland of the heroes of the victorious World Cup 2016 - Taylor Hall, Matt Duchenne, Corey Perry, Mark Shayfli and Brad Marchand.

Swedish stars will also be represented at the World Cup in Switzerland. First of all, we are talking about John Klingberg, Adam Larsson, Matthias Ekholm, Gustav Nyquist, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Victor Arvidsson, Richard Rackell, Philippe Forsberg, Eric Gustafsson and Patrick Hernkvist. The composition of the current world champions can also be supplemented by William Nyulander, Linus Umark, William Karlsson, Henrik Lundquist, Victor Hedman and Gabriel Landeskug.
