It is important for students, teachers, and, of course, parents, before the onset of autumn, to know how many weeks in the upcoming school year 2019-2020 and what the calendar of academic and vacation time will be for educational institutions of Russia working on a semester or trimester system.
Norms and Rules
Traditionally, the new school year in Russia, as in many other countries, begins on the first working day of September. Although this norm is recommendatory in nature, it is adhered to by all educational institutions of the country.
Differences in the celebration of Knowledge Day are possible in those years when the first of September falls on Saturday (as it was in the 2018-2019 academic year). Then educational institutions working on a 6-day schedule go to work on Saturday, and schools with a 5-day schedule on the next Monday.
In the 2019-2020 academic year, Knowledge Day falls on Sunday. This means that solemn lines in all schools of Russia will be held on the same day - 09/02/19.
As for vacation periods, they, as well as the end date of the school year, each educational institution sets individually, focusing on the following basic norms:
- The duration of summer vacations for students can not be less than 2 months.
- Rest periods between individual periods of study (quarters or trimesters) cannot be less than 7 days.
- The total vacation time (excluding summer holidays) cannot be less than 30 calendar days.
In the event of force majeure circumstances, management may decide to postpone the vacation. But, the offset is allowed no more than 2 weeks.
Shortly before September, teachers are most interested in how many academic weeks will be in the upcoming school year 2019-2020, because before September 1 they will have to develop a calendar planning of the learning process and think about combining lessons if in reality there will be less lessons than the curriculum suggests.
So, in the coming year we are expecting 35 academic weeks (excluding vacation periods), which corresponds to standard curricula. This means that program compaction will only be needed where the lessons coincide with public holidays or rescheduled weekends.
Semester system
The semester system is a classic study schedule that is familiar to every adult, in which the academic year is divided into 4 quarters. In this case, the calendar, which teachers and students can use in 2020, determining how many weeks to study and when to expect the next vacation, will look like:
Fourth | 5 day | 6 day |
I quarter | 02.09.19 – 25.10.19 | 02.09.19 – 26.10.19 |
Autumn vacation 28.10.19 – 03.11.19
ІІ quarter | 05.11.19 – 25.12.19 | 05.11.19 – 25.12.19 |
Winter holiday 26.12.19 – 09.01.20
ІІІ quarter | 09.01.20 – 20.03.20 | 09.01.20 – 21.03.20 |
spring Break 23.03.20 – 29.03.20
IV quarter | 30.03.20 – 25.05.20 | 30.03.20 – 25.05.20 |
Summer vacation 26.05.20 – 31.08.20 |
First quarterstarting Monday 2 September will last 8 weeks. No additional days off are foreseen during this period. The most joyful day for all students will be Teacher's Day. Since the holiday is celebrated on the first Sunday of October (04.10.19), in educational institutions it will be celebrated on the last business day (Friday or Saturday).
Second quarter It will begin on Tuesday, November 5th, since National Unity Day (04/04/19) in 2020 falls on Monday. Thus, the 2nd quarter in duration will be slightly less than 8 weeks. The last school day will be December 25th.
Third quarter, perhaps, will throw a few questions. And the first of them is how many working weeks will be in the 3rd academic period in 2019-2020 and when students need to come to school after the New Year holidays.
Traditionally, the winter holidays are held from January 1 to 8, inclusive, and two days, sneaking up on the weekend, are postponed. In 2020, the calendar is more than interesting, because before the adoption of the official decree on the transfer of holidays, it is very difficult to say how to distribute working hours.
One option is to transfer the weekend from the 4th and 5th of the day to the next working day on January 9 and 10, respectively. In this case, students of schools working on a 5-day week will receive a vacation of 16 days (from 12.28.19 to 12.01.20). But, another option is also possible - these two days will be postponed, as in 2019, to the May holidays.
For first graders in February, additional vacations will be announced from 02/25/20 to 03/01/20.
One way or another, the longest academic quarter, consisting of 10 working weeks, will end on Friday 04/20/20 (for five days) or on Saturday 04/21/20 (for six days).
Fourth quarter starts on March 30 and will be perhaps the shortest in this school year, lasting 8 weeks, of which 3 will be incomplete right away.
Most likely, May 4 and 12 will be days off due to the transfer of holidays, and on 04/30/20 and 05/08/20 will please the children with short lessons.
The last call of 2020 in Russian schools will be celebrated on Monday, May 25.
Trimester system
The relatively new, but already well-proven trimester learning system provides students with more periods to relax.
According to the norms, with such a training schedule, a vacation week is supposed for students every 5 working weeks.
For the trimester system, it is possible to calculate how many academic weeks and rest periods in the academic year 2019-2020 according to the following schedule:
I trimester | Study | 09/02/19 - 10/04/19 (5 days) 09/02/19 - 10/05/19 (6 days) |
holidays | 07.10.19 – 13.10.19
Study | 10/14/19 - 11/15/19 (5 days) 10/14/19 - 11/16/19 (6 days)
Holidays 11/18/19 - 11/24/19
II trimester | Study | 11/25/19 - 12/27/19 (5 days) 11/25/19 - 12/28/19 (6 days) |
holidays | 30.12.19 – 08.01.20
Study | 01/09/20 - 02/14/20 (5 days) 01/09/20 - 02/15/20 (6 days)
Holidays 02/17/20 - 02/24/20
III trimester | Study | 02.24.20 - 04.03.20 (5 days) 02.24.20 - 04.04.20 (6 days) |
holidays | 06.04.20 – 12.04.20
Study | 13.04.20 – 25.05.20
Summer holidays 05/26/20 - 08/31/20 |
I trimester traditionally will consist of 10 school weeks of which only one will be shortened.
II trimester will take 5 weeks before the New Year and 5 weeks after the winter holidays.
III trimester according to the calendar will be the longest in the 2019-2020 academic year. Although in fact it will turn out to be workers for 12 weeks, 4 of them will be short (on March 8 and May holidays).
Thus, with the trimester system in the school year there will be 32 (or 33) working weeks. It will be possible to more accurately calculate the training and days off after the production calendar is officially published, in which all transfers of weekends and holidays in 2020 are clearly registered.
