History and traditions of the holiday
The first event entitled “Holiday of the North” was held on March 30, 1934. At that time, the marathon was a competition of skiers from different regions and regions of the USSR. Only a few dozen athletes took part in the debut competition, due to which the organizers announced the need to popularize the event. Subsequently, it was decided to combine the marathon with military training, due to which shooting contests were added to the program.
It is important to note that even during the Second World War, the marathon did not stop. The holiday of the North continued, and the athletes who arrived at it directly from the front line showed particular enthusiasm.
After the war ended, the marathon gained unprecedented popularity and every year attracted more and more competitors. At that time, athletes over the age of 30 could take part in the event. In 1961, the organizers expanded the competition program, which allowed students and even schoolchildren to participate. In order for all athletes to be in equal conditions, the groups were divided into age categories, and professional skiers were separated from beginners and amateurs.
In 1974, the marathon reached a new world level. The festival brought together not only citizens of the Soviet Union, but also athletes from other countries. During this period, the distance of the ski run varied from 52 to 60 km.
In 1988, a single length of a ski track was introduced, which amounted to 50 km. And since 2011, distances of 25 and 15 km have also been added to the program.
