Planting tomato on seedlings and in the greenhouse

Planting tomatoes for seedlings and in the greenhouse in 2020

It is quite difficult to grow a good tomato crop in most regions of our country in open ground, so gardeners are actively mastering the planting of tomato seedlings with their subsequent cultivation in a greenhouse. To get a good harvest in the summer of 2020, it is worth thinking about seeds in February.

Gardener lunar calendar

No matter how far science strides forward, nature still adheres to its laws. Many gardeners know that the crop depends not only on the quality of the planting material, but also on the phase of the moon. Even inexperienced summer residents will easily grow the most complex cultures if they use the lunar calendar.

  • The new moon and the full moon are forbidden times for landing. Complex are also considered two days before and after these periods. Experienced gardeners know that on the new moon and full moon you can’t work on the ground at all, and only when absolutely necessary, cultivation is permissible.
  • The growing moon is favorable for plants that give ground fruits. During this period, it is recommended to transfer the seedlings to the greenhouse, to plant, but only if we are not talking about root crops.
  • The waning moon is a period for the formation of the underground part of plants.

These are the simplest rules for growing garden crops, but still for each plant there are its own nuances.

Tomatoes

When to plant tomatoes for seedlings

To get an early harvest of greenhouse tomatoes, seedlings should be started already in late January. In 2020, at the beginning of February there will be a growing moon, and this time should be used with benefit for seed germination. Favorable signs for tomatoes are Taurus, Cancer, Libra, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces. And here, too, there are nuances: summer varieties love the constellation Pisces and Cancer, which give abundant fruiting, but at the same time the tomatoes will not lie. Tomato varieties for long-term storage should be planted in February 2020, when the Moon is in Scorpio, Libra or Taurus. These signs will give not only a good harvest, but also a strong seed material for next year. Absolutely unsuitable for this culture - Aquarius, Aries, Virgo, Gemini, Leo. An interesting sign of Sagittarius, it is considered neutral, but not in the case when tomatoes are planted to obtain seeds. You can’t expect a plentiful harvest from Sagittarius, but the planting material obtained from such tomatoes will be strong, resistant to adverse conditions and productive in the future.

General rules for growing seedlings boil down to the fact that some signs are considered “wet” when watering and top dressing can be done. These are Cancer, Scorpio, Libra, Pisces. And there are also “dry ones” when they recommend harvesting, moreover, with a waning moon, so that the fruits can lie down.

Depending on where in the future tomatoes will be grown, it depends on when to plant tomato seedlings in 2020. For a greenhouse and for late-ripening crops, this is done in February, for open ground and for early-ripening tomatoes, seedlings can be tackled in March.

Seedling tomato

Planting seedlings in the ground

Tomatoes should be transplanted into the ground no earlier than mid-April and no later than the beginning of June, as even early ripe varieties may not mature before night frosts begin. The optimal period is the growing moon, but it also happens that the timing of transplanting seedlings into the soil has approached, and for almost the whole month favorable signs are in a waning stage. In this case, it is recommended to choose the desired Zodiac in its final phase and start planting, paying only more attention to still immature plants.

If you plan to grow tomatoes in a polycarbonate greenhouse, you can start transferring seedlings already in the first decade of April. If an unheated greenhouse under a film is selected for growing this crop, the process is postponed for two weeks. At the end of March, prepared seedlings can only be transplanted into a heated greenhouse. These periods are averaged and are suitable for the middle zone, for the northern regions their own characteristics.

Attention! Seedlings are completely ready for transfer to the soil 60 days after sowing seeds.

How to transplant tomatoes

A week before the transfer of seedlings to the soil, it is necessary to prepare the soil. The earth is loosened and introduced nutrients. It is better to fertilize in the fall, but if this has not been done, organic substances must be added in the spring. Tomatoes are very fond of superphosphate and potassium sulfate. If soil with high acidity, you need to add wood ash to it.

Even growing tomatoes in a greenhouse, you need to monitor the temperature of the soil. The earth should warm up to at least 15-16 degrees. If the greenhouse is unheated, then before transplanting seedlings, it is recommended to additionally cover the ground with a film to create a greenhouse effect.

Attention! Tomatoes are not grown in the same place for two years in a row.

Before transplantation, remove the topsoil (10 cm). Plants feed for 7-10, and begin to temper in 3-4 days, taking out cups with seedlings to open air, for example, to a balcony, making sure that there is no frost on the street. For 1 day to transfer to a new place, seedlings are abundantly watered. This will not only nourish the roots with moisture, but also simplify the transshipment process. On the day of transplantation, boxes with seedlings are brought into the greenhouse for several hours, so that the plants get used to the new living conditions, and only then begin to plant tomatoes in the ground.

Tomatoes are recommended to be staggered, leaving a distance between the bushes of 30-35 cm for low-growing varieties and 70-80 cm for tall. Stamp varieties can be placed more compactly, at a distance of only 20 cm from each other. Transplanted bushes do not touch 3-4 days, after which they are tied to a vertical support. Hives can only be cultivated after they have taken root well.

As practice shows, compliance with all preparatory stages gives a good harvest.
