In 2020, Tokyo will host the Summer Sports Olympics. Three cities claimed to host the XXXII World Games: Istanbul, Madrid and Tokyo. 60 votes were cast for the capital of Japan, which doubled the points that Istanbul received.
Choosing a place and time for the 2020 Summer Olympics
Japan has already met the Olympians more than once: in 1964 in Tokyo, in 1974 in Sapporo and in 1998 in Nagano. The rivals of the Land of the Rising Sun, Spain and Turkey, did not even think that Japan would again become the mistress of the games, but fate decreed otherwise. The choice of the Olympic Committee is understandable: the high level of security in this state outweighed the scales, which also stood on the country's economic development. And even the fact of the accident of the Fukushima nuclear power plant did not become an obstacle to choosing the place where the Olympics will be held.
On September 7, 2013, not only the venue was determined, but also the time of the 2020 Summer Olympics. The opening will take place on July 24. Many are indignant about this date, because July-August are the hottest months in Japan. Dates were agreed upon at the application stage. The range was quite wide - from July 15 to August 31. Adjustments were made after determining the finalists.
Money played a key role. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) receives additional income from the broadcast, and in the middle of summer, the sports broadcasting schedule in Europe and the USA is free. Athletes will be forced to compete in difficult conditions for the body, and they will need time to adapt. Particularly unlucky were the marathon runners, who would be forced to run not only under the scorching sun, but also in conditions of high humidity.
The Japanese authorities understand the problem and are considering the possibility of switching the country to summer time (two hours ahead) in 2019-2020, so that the competitions can be held in a cooler time of day.
Emblem
The original emblem of the 2020 Summer Olympics looked like a capital “T”. The designer from Belgium Olivier Daby saw in her plagiarism of his work, the logo of the theater in the city of Liege. The organizing committee decided to cede to the Belgian and announced a competition for a new logo.
The commission included leading athletes, designers and artists, a total of 20 people. As a result, the new emblem turned out in the form of a ring in the Edo style, reminiscent of a chessboard. The pattern consists of rectangles of different shapes, which symbolizes the unity of all countries and cultures, and the circle - the unification of the world around sport.
For the Paralympic Games, the emblem was slightly changed: it will be a wide open bowl, consisting of all the same chess rectangles. Below is a symbol of all the Paralympic Games: three colored sickles, united around a white dot.
Mascot
In February 2018, the official mascots of the upcoming Summer Olympics were presented. For the first time, they were chosen by primary school students. Voting took place in 17 thousand schools. At the trial of little Japanese were presented 2000 designs. The love of children for anime won, and the mascots were the boy’s plaid figures for the Olympic and girls for the Paralympic games.
Names to the heroes have not yet been given, but by nature it turned out to be strong, with a high sense of justice, mobile, ready to instantly move in the creature's space.Talismans will allow Japan to fully reveal its features: checkered boy and girl will take part in the opening and closing of the 2020 games, as well as in all events dedicated to this event.
Total budget
According to forecasts, 16-17 billion dollars will be spent on the Olympic Games in Tokyo. The IOC considers such expenses to be too large, although when compared with the games in Sochi (2014), this amount is quite modest. About 50 billion dollars were spent in Russia. But the mistress of past games Brazil cost only 4 billion.
When Japan applied, the country's government did not expect that the IOC itself would sabotage preparations for the Olympics. Recently, there has been a trend of pressure on the host countries of the games in the article of cost reduction. This creates a burden on the economy of the state and disrupts all plans to prepare for the main sporting event. In particular, IOC President Thomas Bach called for reducing the overall budget of the games and dividing it into two parts: investment and operating.
Olympic facilities
All competitions will be held within the capital of Japan. In addition to sports, the number of Olympic facilities will include places of leisure. It will be the Olympic Stadium, Tokyo Sports Palace, Heritage, Meiji Temple, Yoyogi Park, the area of the Imperial Palace, Nippon Budokan, the gardens of the Imperial Palace of Japan, Tokyo International Forum, Sumida, Olympic Park, Odaiba, Yumonashima, Ariake.
The laying of the Olympic stadium was held in December 2016. 1.3 billion dollars were allocated for its construction. The stadium was built according to the project of the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma with the collaboration of a specialist from Britain Zaha Hadid.
The capacity of the stands will be 68 thousand people, although initially larger-scale stands were planned. They were abandoned due to an increase in the project cost. Part of the audience seats will be temporary. There will be no retractable roof either.
They plan to complete the construction by September 2019, and the new stadium will host the Rugby World Cup 2019. As part of the Olympics, it will host football and athletics competitions.
Many sports facilities are lagging behind in preparation for the plan, and this is influenced by the IOC’s constant pressure on expenses. For example, sailing test competitions were to be held in Tokyo in 2018, but the infrastructure for them is not completely ready. Experts express concern that the water at the upcoming Olympic Games will be as unprepared as in Rio.
Volunteers
Not a single major sporting event can do without voluntary assistants. Registration of volunteers for the 2020 Olympic Games opened in the summer of 2018, and personal interviews will be held in February 2019. A total of 110,000 people are planned to be accepted, 80% of whom will be involved in sports facilities, the rest as guides and accompanying people around the city.
A citizen of the Land of the Rising Sun or a foreigner over the age of 18 can become a volunteer. Preference is given to volunteers from Tokyo, Hokkaido, Fukuoka and Osaka. One of the conditions is fluency in languages, as well as the availability of free time during the competition. An additional plus is the experience of working with the elderly and people with disabilities.
Japanese organizers plan to surprise the guests with volunteer robots, as well as cars and buses without drivers.
Competitions
Five new sports were introduced in the 2020 games program: baseball (softball), rock climbing, skateboarding, surfing and karate. Also, the program also included 15 new disciplines in familiar forms:
- 800, 1500 meters freestyle and mixed relay 4 × 100 in swimming;
- mixed relay 4 × 400 in athletics;
- three to three basketball competitions. Both male and female teams will participate;
- Cycling on the track - discipline "madison";
- Fencing - mixed competition men / women;
Mixed team competitions will be held in archery, table tennis, triathlon, judo. It turns out that the number of mixed competitions will increase to 18 as opposed to 9, as it was before.
In some disciplines, where previously only men took part, women will now be able to perform: rowing, canoeing, boxing, sailing and shooting. As a result of such changes, the Olympic Games will become more youthful and democratic.
Medals
The awards that athletes will receive at the games will be made from recycled materials. Each resident of the Land of the Rising Sun will be able to contribute to the preparation for the sporting event. Old mobile phones and other equipment will be used. To do this, in April 2017, gadget reception centers were opened throughout the country. This will save the budget and save the environment. In total, it is necessary to make 5 thousand medals, which will require 2 tons of gold, silver and bronze.

Due to the possibility of not allowing Russian athletes to enter the 2020 Olympics, Vladimir Putin instructed the Olympic Committee to close this issue, affecting the restoration of the rights of the All-Russian Athletics Federation.
The fact is that Russian athletes do not have the right to fly under the flag of their country in international competitions. The colors for the flag are neutral, and in case of victory, the anthem of the International Olympic Committee is played. In other words, all the achievements of athletes from Russia are not equated in the victories of the national team, but go only to the personal dossier.
It is worth noting that for participation in the Olympics, athletes need to fill out special applications, and permission is not provided to everyone.
The reason for such toughened measures was the doping scandal in 2015 that erupted over the documentary “Top-secret Doping: How Russia makes its Winners”, in which Russian runner Yulia Stepanova and her husband Vitaliy was told that in Russian sport, taking doping and taking bribes is a common thing, and everything is controlled at the state level.
Where will the next Olympics be held
Preparations for the 2020 games are still in full swing, and the host city of the XXXIII summer competitions is already known. It was Paris, which was announced on July 31, 2017. The capital of France vied with Los Angeles. Only two countries nominated themselves for the right to host the 2024 Summer Games. As a result, the IOC did not vote, and through negotiations, persuaded Los Angeles to withdraw its candidacy for 2024 and accept the Olympic Games in 2028.
