Guessing over the shadows, the insides of animals or the blood of the sacrificial lamb seems too dramatic for a modern person, so they choose the most harmless and peaceful ways of predicting fate.

- those present remove their belts, rings, bracelets, chains and other girdles;

- Cups. 6 items and 7 cups are prepared: a ring, a penny, a tint of bread, a cube of refined sugar, a pinch of salt, an onion. Put them in cups, pour water in the seventh, cover with napkins and mix. By the number of participants they take candles, stick them in the shells, set fire and let them sail. Whose candle burns out before anyone else, that and prepare for the arrival of matchmakers. Worst of all, if the shell sinks to the bottom, drowns, then the girl will most likely not get married at all.
- Pie. For newlyweds or couples wishing to acquire offspring, such fortune-telling is carried out. A round cake is set on the table, a husband and wife are given a knife with a wooden handle in their hands, they blindfold their eyes and asked to divide them into pieces. If you touch the center of the pie with a knife - wait for the boy, the edges - the girl, if you miss - the children will not appear in the new year.
- Ring. Fortune telling is carried out in the company of young unmarried girls, but with the wedding ring of a happy married girlfriend, sister or mother. A ring is tied to a long thread, untwisted between the palms and lowered with a tall glass of water. How many times in the girl’s hands the ring will hit the walls of the vessel, only years to wait until marriage.
- Notes-desires. Before the New Year, all guests are invited to write a cherished desire on a piece of paper, to collapse. When the chimes begin to beat, the papers are set on fire, and the ashes are poured into a glass of champagne. If everything is done correctly and on time - the desire will certainly come true.

- Amount of children. On a frosty New Year's eve, a glass with its ring and water is put out on the window sill for a couple of hours. Before the feast, the glass is taken and the number of irregularities formed is considered: tubercles are boys, cavities are girls.
- Chain. After midnight, in complete solitude, they remove the chain from the neck, rub it, warming between the palms, and throw it on the table.By what form it has taken, they are judging the next thing to come: a circle — cyclical troubles lie ahead, a lane — luck, a knot — illnesses, a triangle — luck in love, a bow — marriage, a snake — deceit and betrayal, a heart — love.
- Grains. A plate of rice, wheat, beans or peas is placed on the table. The question of interest is pronounced in mind or out loud. It is important that the monosyllabic answer “yes” or “no” be given to it. With his left hand, grains are collected in his palm, poured into an empty plate, counted. Even number portends a positive outcome, odd - negative.
- Bulbs. When there are several applicants for the hand, the girl takes the same number of bulbs of the same size, signs the name or number on the husk, and puts it down into the water. Which of the bulbs will take root faster, that guy will ask for her hand next year.
- Kings Before going to bed on New Year's Eve, an unmarried girl takes four kings from a deck of cards, mixes them without looking, puts them under her pillow and makes a mental appeal to make her dream about a future bridegroom. In the morning, checks if all the cards are the same. The king who lies “shirt” to the rest will be the groom: peak - the husband will be much older than the bride; club - the groom will be strict and tough; hearts - in marriage with him harmony and happiness will come; tambourine - the groom will be a musician or artist.
- Mirror. The most mystical fortune-telling is not for the faint of heart. A carafe and three candles are placed on the table in front of them. Behind the carafe with water, a mirror is installed, which should be constantly looked at. It is believed that in this way you can see the image of the narrowed. The main thing at the moment the picture appears is to start saying "Chur, me!" So that the essence does not materialize and does not drive you crazy.

In the history of the ancient world, fortunetellers were engaged in fortunetelling. The field of magical predictions included things that today have become scientific, for example, medical diagnoses or astronomical predictions.
With the adoption of Christianity, any occult practices and superstitious ideas were subjected to condemnation, church persecution. But the desire to learn at least a little about their own future, prompted the curious to come up with more and more new ways of fortune telling.
In the Middle Ages, bibliomania was widespread in Russia and Europe, when books were used as fortune-telling books: lunar, carol, thunder, planetarium. The most famous in Russia was the "Fortunetelling Book of the Prophet and Tsar Solomon." The method is that the fortuneteller comes up with a question, opens the publication on any page and reads what is written there. At the same time, trying to understand the "secret meaning" of how this might resonate with his question.
To the same type include popular fortunetelling or based on the wheel of fortune. When a framed circle with page numbers or chapters is shown on a page. Guessing with the help of grain, grains of sand or small pebbles trying to get a personal omen. Based on where you rolled, where the item stopped, they read “fate”. In Islam, the Qur'an divination is still practiced in this style.
Truly Slavic methods of fortune telling are known, with reference to the natural evil spirits: the grandfather, the house-maker, the wild field and the water swamp. In the late Middle Ages, all methods of prediction turned into the salon fun of the rich nobility. Also, they are perceived today as youthful harmless fun.
According to the assurances of those knowledgeable in witchcraft, the most reliable are the predictions obtained in critical periods. The New Year is just such a moment to try to give yourself a rich economic husband, replenishment in the family or a significant increase in salary.
The main thing to remember when divining is that you should pay attention only to positive predictions, but even from bad signs you can draw positive conclusions for yourself.
