In 2020, Earth Day will traditionally be timed to coincide with environmental problems, and the ongoing activities will be aimed at saving nature across the planet. Today, the holiday is held on a large scale in almost all countries. According to unofficial data, more than 200 million people are taking part in it.
When will be celebrated
People who want to participate in public events aimed at improving the environmental situation are wondering what date Earth Day will be in 2020. The confusion with dates arises from the fact that they celebrate the holiday at the international level twice:
- March 20 - the day of the vernal equinox;
- April 22 - at the UN-established World Earth Day.
Events dedicated to Earth Day are held throughout the month - between two set dates. Although large-scale subbotniks and actions, meetings with scientists are traditionally organized on April 22.
Origin and History
The day of the vernal equinox was dedicated to the planet for a reason. It is believed that during this period there is an awakening of nature from winter sleep. It is great for protecting the planet from the negative impact of humanity, landscaping and other activities aimed at saving the environment.
World Earth Day, which will be celebrated on April 22 in 2020, has a long history. It all started with the fact that in the XIX century in North America forests were cut down mercilessly. People used wood for construction, as a fuel and for other purposes, but the irrational use of natural resources brought great harm to the environment. Most affected animals, fish, insects and other representatives of the fauna.
Nebraska Senator Nelson appealed to residents to plant trees. In just 1 day, nearly 1 million seedlings were rooted. Gradually, the action gained more and more popularity, and in 1970 it was held officially throughout America. In 1971, the UN supported the holiday, so it gained an international format. In Russia, began to celebrate World Earth Day since 1992.
Symbols and attributes
Over decades of celebration, certain customs and traditions have formed. Appeared its own attributes:
- Flag of the Earth. Although it has only symbolic meaning, not a single event dedicated to preserving the environment and caring for the environment can do without it. The flag is a blue flag on which the planet is depicted. Usually a photo made from space by Apollo 17 crew members is applied to the canvas.
- Theta The Greek letter theta is less commonly used, although it is also associated with Earth Day. An elongated oval with a line in the middle is usually depicted in green on a white background.
- Bell of the World. This symbol is of particular importance, as its ringing encourages everyone to pay attention to the environment. The first bell was installed at the UN headquarters in New York back in 1954. Its main feature is that it was cast from coins collected by children.
Russia also has the Bells of Peace. The first Bell was installed in 1998 in Novosibirsk at the International Center of the Roerichs. Later, St. Petersburg, Volgograd and other cities joined the initiative. In 2014, the grand opening of the Bell took place in Moscow.
Traditions and customs
Each country has its own traditions. Russia is no exception. In 2020, a number of events dedicated to World Earth Day will be held:
- Public actions for the improvement and gardening of settlements. In cities and villages, people gather together to remove garbage, clear and plant trees. Shops, playgrounds are painted, flowerbeds are dug up and flowers are planted, other work is being done to improve the territory.
- Festivals, seminars and conferences. They urge people to pay attention to the environmental situation. Participants offer solutions to global problems related to the protection of water, the ozone ball, plant or animal life. Conferences and festivals are attended by both adults and children.
- Exhibitions. The main theme is environmental protection. Organizers come up with unusual compositions, look for unique exhibits to attract more people.
- Rallies and flash mobs. One of the ways to attract public attention to the irrational use of natural resources, solving environmental problems.
- Concerts, sports and marathons. They are usually held on a charitable basis. Money raised at such events is sent to research centers and other environmental institutions.
At the end of March, since 2004, Earth Hour has been held. The essence of this event is that people turn off lighting devices, as well as electrical appliances and household appliances for one hour. Entire cities join the campaign, in which they turn off the illumination on the streets and even industrial equipment in factories. The action is held in order to attract people's attention to environmental problems and climate change.
