Celebration date

For centuries, Valentine's Day has been celebrated on February 14th. The date is fixed, so it does not depend on the day of the week, the lunar calendar or other factors.

Important! In 2020, Valentine's Day will be celebrated on February 14th.

It is not an official holiday. Since the holiday in 2020 falls on Friday, the able-bodied population will have to go to work. The evening can be devoted to relaxing together with your loved one, going to a restaurant or a cinema.

Legends of Valentine

The holiday is shrouded in many legends. It is believed that it is dedicated to a doctor named Valentine, who lived in the III century. The legend about him is saturated with love and good. He was a talented doctor and worked in the army of the Roman emperor Claudius II. From an early age, Valentine was a Christian, and in his youth he took the priesthood. In the service, he often faced injustice, but could not reconcile with it.

The emperor wanted to conquer as many lands as possible. To realize these plans, he needed to have a strong army. All middle-aged men and young men served in the army, but this was not enough. The emperor made a non-standard decision - he forbade his soldiers to marry. Claudius II believed that if a soldier had nothing to lose, he would be able to fight more courageously and not be afraid of death.

Once, a guy turned to Valentine who wanted to marry his lover. Because of his kindness, the doctor could not refuse the warrior. At night, he performed the rite according to all the canons of the Christian church, having married a young couple. And although the ceremony was held secretly, rumors of what had happened reached the emperor. Valentine was immediately arrested.

In anticipation of the death sentence, the doctor was in a prison cell. The jailer’s daughter came to him daily. She was very kind, brought food. Valentine fell in love with her, but could not admit it. On the eve of his execution, which took place on February 14, he wrote a note to the girl. In it, he talked about his feelings. The next day he was executed, and the jailer’s daughter found a note after the execution of the sentence. So there was a tradition to write valentines to loved ones. And although the memory of St. Valentine began to be honored almost immediately, a holiday in his honor appeared only VIII centuries ago.

Another legend tells of the patrician Valentine, who was a Christian. He secretly married a guy and a girl, but this became known to the emperor. The guard arrested both young people and Valentine, but he belongs to the upper class, so he was soon released. To cheer up the lovers who were threatened with execution, he wrote them letters on red hearts, symbolizing love in Christianity. Later, he managed to persuade the guards to let the young people go in exchange for his life. Before his death, Valentine wrote a letter to a blind girl who worked in prison. After she picked up the message, a miracle happened - her vision returned.
