When will be celebrated
Since some church holidays have a “floating” date, it is sometimes difficult to figure out what date will be the Day of Peter and Fevronia. This holiday has nothing to do with Easter, and therefore its date does not change from year to year.

It is believed that the memory of miracle workers is honored on the day of their death, although this is not entirely true. Some historical sources indicate that the burial of the prince and princess fell on Bright Week in 1228. It is known that Easter is always celebrated in April, but not in June (according to the old calendar, the holiday falls on June 25). If the information is correct, then a mismatch occurs, but the researchers easily explain it. June 25 (July 8) is associated with another important event - the transfer of the relics of the saints from one cathedral to another. Since these events took place several centuries ago (presumably in the 15th century), there is no scientific confirmation of the version of researchers.
The story of a couple in love
The life story of Orthodox saints is shrouded in legends that have been passed down from generation to generation for several centuries. The story of two lovers began with the fact that the prince of Murom fell ill with leprosy. No one could help him get rid of the disease. One day he had a dream that a girl named Fevronia could heal him. He went to Ryazan lands and found a girl who practiced medicine and was well known on medicinal herbs. The prince turned to her for help. Fevronia went to the meeting, but made a condition - the prince should marry her.
The master agreed to her terms. The girl really was able to cure him of leprosy. Well, the prince kept his word, so he took her to Murom with him. They later got married. The prince and princess loved each other very much, and therefore never parted. In old age, both went to the monastery and took tonsure. They wrote a will in which they asked to be buried in one coffin. They asked God to die on the same day, because life without a second half seemed unbearable to them. Surprisingly, the saints died in one day and almost one hour. At first they were buried in different places, but in the morning they were incredibly together. The saints were canonized in 1547.
Interesting! In historical chronicles there is no mention of Prince Peter of Murom. Scientists suggest that the legends evolved about David Yuryevich and his wife. After the prince was tonsured, they began to call Peter. There is practically no information about his wife in historical sources.
Traditions and rites
On July 8, believers will certainly go to church for worship. Peter and Fevronia are considered the patrons of the family, so the spouses turn to them with prayers. They bring family well-being and happiness. Pilgrims go to the Holy Trinity Convent, which now houses the relics of saints.
Traditionally, in 2020, on the day of Peter and Fevronia, many marriages will be performed. In Murom and other cities on this day, even the registry offices work longer.According to popular belief, a couple who got married on this holiday will have a long and happy life. Although the faithful do not celebrate the wedding, as the day falls on the post of Peter. For this reason, you can only eat food from plant products. But you can get married and have an engagement. In this case, the future family will be strong and happy.
In ancient times, it was believed that on this day, mermaids went deep into the water, so it was safe to swim in ponds. As in other holidays, the girls wondered to learn about their narrowed, but it was strictly forbidden to use black magic. Our ancestors did not go to the forest that day so as not to get lost. It was believed that evil spirits confused the traces of man, so he can not return home.

A pair of princes of Murom became a symbol of love and fidelity. In 2006, activists in Murom gathered more than 20 thousand votes to support the creation of a family holiday in honor of Orthodox saints. After 2 years, the first Day of Family, Love and Fidelity with the support of Svetlana Medvedeva.
Since then, a holiday dedicated to family values has been held annually in almost all cities of Russia, although the main events are traditionally organized in Murom. Among the main traditions is the presentation of the medal “For Love and Fidelity”. Only couples who have lived together for 25 years and have raised worthy children can get it.
