In a number of professional medical holidays, Medic Day has always stood out especially. How is it different from Doctor’s Day or Nurse’s Day, for example? The fact is that on this day it is customary to honor not only doctors or nurses, but all those related to medicine. These are surgeons and therapists, dentists and laboratory assistants, orderlies and obstetricians, researchers and technologists, chemists and biologists - in a word, everything on whose work the health and human life depends.
The Day of the Medic, or, more correctly, the Day of the Medical Worker, Russia is celebrated on the third of June Sunday. In 2020, Medic Day falls on June 21.
Included in the official state list of professional holidays and memorable days. Since it always falls on Sunday, it is non-working, however, the rule of transfer of days off does not apply to it.
Together with Russia, medical professionals are congratulated in other countries, our CIS neighbors. So, for example, in Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, the holiday is celebrated on the same day - the third Sunday of June. But in Azerbaijan, this celebration has a fixed date - June 17, in honor of the founding of the Ministry of Health in 1918, the first in the republic. Medic Day is an event with a long history. He appeared almost sixty years ago, in 1980. With the collapse of the USSR, triumph was not forgotten, and in 1994, by an official Decree of the President, Medical Worker Day returned to the list of professional holidays.

There are no single, common traditions that have developed over the years of existence, the Day of the medical worker. Most often, this holiday is celebrated with round tables, open meetings, concerts, meetings. Ceremonial speeches and congratulations are heard from the stages and stands, the most outstanding workers are awarded with prizes, diplomas and titles. In Russia there are two highest awards that a professional from medicine can receive. These are “Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation” and “Honored Health Worker of the Russian Federation”. Presentation of such an award is a clear recognition of services to society and the state, thanks for the saved lives, remarkable talent and genuine dedication in the field of medicine.
Hippocratic Oath
Everyone who has ever encountered medicine has heard of the Hippocratic oath - the solemn promise that every doctor makes upon receiving a diploma. However, not everyone knows what this oath really is.
In fact, an oath is a moral and ethical restriction imposed on every physician, a verbal formula that regulates the behavior of a doctor. The text of the solemn promise itself has come down to us from the depths of centuries, but today it is not used in its classical form. Doctors read out a modified version, and in some countries the Hippocratic oath is not used at all.So, in the USA, graduates of medical colleges take the so-called doctor’s oath based on the professional code, since even an adapted version of the Hippocratic oath is considered unacceptable in modern society.
In our country, the oath of Hippocrates was transformed into the Oath of a Russian doctor, and the text of the solemn promise itself has changed three times over the years of the existence of the state. Today, such a moral and ethical promise has been elevated to a series of legislative norms and is enshrined in the law on health protection.
The history of the emergence of the main medical code is still not completely clear due to the too large “age” of the text. It is known for certain that the text of the oath is much older than the life of Hippocrates. According to legend, the great physician of antiquity leads his family from Asclepius himself, the god of healing. Asclepius was once a mere mortal, but because of his talent for treating people, he was elevated to the rank of immortal. The promise “do no harm” was transmitted among his descendants, and each new doctor solemnly vowed to abide by all the precepts of his ancestor before entering the path of treatment. Hippocrates was the first to write down the text and invited all his students to make a promise to adhere to the indicated moral and ethical standards.
