January 2020 in Russia: calendar, holidays, weekends

Weekends in January in Russia are considered one of the longest throughout the year. New 2020 is no exception. January 2020 begins on Wednesday with the most beloved holiday of adults and children - the New Year. New Year holidays last more than a week, and during this period you can arrange a mini-vacation: go on a trip, or do all the household chores that have accumulated over a long time of working days. To rationally plan your schedule, you need to know how to relax in 2020.

Official weekend

Holidays in January 2020 in Russia begin with the celebration of the New Year, smoothly turning into a religious bright holiday of the Nativity of Christ. The Labor Code of the Russian Federation states that the official non-working period for this month is dates from 01 to 08 inclusive. Thus, the Russians have the opportunity to magnificently celebrate the New Year, Christmas, and relax a bit on the 8th day before workdays. Citizens come to work on January 9, Thursday.

Calendar of New Year holidays and weekends in Russia for January 2020

Since January 4th and 5th are official holidays and fall on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, a decision can be made to transfer them to other dates.

There are two possible scenarios:

  1. the weekend from 4 and 5 will be postponed to January 9 and 10, which will immediately give 12 days off in a row;
  2. Russians will be offered 2 additional days off for May holidays on May 4 and 5, which will give 5 days off in a row.

Most likely the second option will be implemented. Then some enterprises can leave January 9th and 10th non-working due to their postponement to other dates. But this is determined by an individual decision of the organization’s management and approved by a separate internal order.

So, 01/04/2020 is postponed to 05/04/2020 (Monday), and 01/05/2020, respectively, to 05/05/2020 (Tuesday). As a result, the May Day will last 5 days from Friday 01/05/2020 to Tuesday 05/05/2020 inclusive.

On May 9, Russians will rest only 3 days from 05/09/2020 (Saturday) to 05/11/2020 (Monday).

Important! Official weekends with date transfers are approved annually by a separate Resolution, which is ratified by the Russian Tripartite Commission. The publication of the document is expected in the fall of 2019.

A more accurate work schedule needs to be clarified at your facility. In some organizations, working hours are not standardized and working hours are determined depending on the position and type of activity. For example, ambulance doctors, firefighters, rescuers and representatives of many other professions, usually work on a daily basis, so their working hours may coincide with the official weekend. In this case, they are entitled to compensation for work during the holiday period.

Orthodox calendar

In January, Orthodox Christians celebrate one of the greatest and brightest holidays - the Nativity of Christ. This event is invariably celebrated on January 07. The preceding Christmas post ends on January 6 (its beginning on December 27 of the previous year). On the night of January 6th to 7th, a festive Liturgy begins in the temples, which is served at night. At the end, the communion of the Holy Mysteries of Christ takes place - an important and special sacrament for all Orthodox Christians.

Other, no less great holidays are the Circumcision of the Lord (01/14/2020) and the Epiphany or Epiphany (01/19/2020). The celebration of the Circumcision of the Lord is dedicated to the fact that the infant accepted circumcision according to the Old Testament law, established for all Jewish boys. Then the Lord was given the name Jesus, which was predicted by the Archangel Gabriel.

The baptism of the Lord is set for the event of the baptism of Jesus Christ in the waters of the Jordan. Then the Holy Spirit came upon him and a voice from heaven proclaimed that "This is My Son ...". On this holiday, it is customary to consecrate water and plunge into natural bodies of water (rivers and lakes).
