Not so long ago, Ford, Hyundai and Kia presented new products in the crossover segment with three rows of seats. Toyota was not long in coming and presented the updated Highlander 2020 at the New York Motor Show in April this year. Fans of the brand admitted that the fourth-generation crossover combined all the best from the Japanese auto giant models presented in recent years.
About new
One of the main markets for Highlander is the United States of America. The model takes second place in popularity among crossovers, second only to Ford Explorer. In total, 244511 cars of this model were sold last year (for comparison: 1148 were sold in Russia in 2018). That is why the United States was chosen as the platform for the announcement of new items. By the way, previous generations are also first introduced in the States.
Presentation of Toyota Highlander 2020 was quite original. The carmaker artist printed about 200 elements of the new crossover on a 3D printer, manually painted them, and then connected them in a certain order and hung them on the illuminated structure. As a result, viewers could admire the soaring 3D model.
Exterior
At first glance at Highlander 2020, it might seem that its body is not very different from the previous generation. However, the differences in appearance are obvious. So, the novelty received a more massive front bumper and slightly narrowed lights. The false radiator grille is similar to the one we already saw on the fifth generation RAV4, but it does not reach the bottom edge of the bumper. The changes affected the trunk lid, rear lights and bumper. In basic equipment, the model will come with 18-inch wheels; for top-end equipment, 20-inch wheels are provided.
In the exterior of the new Toyota Highlander, features of the latest generations of the RAV4 and Avalon are clearly visible.
The creators said that the new product (in comparison with the ancestor) will be 60 mm longer (4950 mm), other dimensions are not declassified. Due to the elongated base, the trunk volume has also increased, although slightly, by 65 liters.
Interior
Small metamorphoses (compared with its predecessor) has undergone and the interior of the car. The main difference is the display of a multimedia system with a diagonal of 12.3 inches. Today it is one of the largest screens in the line of cars of this class. But it will not be available in all trim levels, but only in the top one, owners of budget versions of the crossover will have to be content with an 8-inch display.
As for equipment, the Japanese automaker equipped the entire line of Toyota Highlander 2020 with a proprietary set of active safety systems Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 (replaced Toyota Safety Sense P). In the list of functions:
- Lane keeping systems and frontal collision warning.
- Adaptive Cruise Control.
- Automatic high beam switching.
- Recognition of road signs and others.

Engine, gearbox and transmission
Previous generations of Highlander are built on the Camry platform. The novelty received the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, on which today almost all cars coming off the assembly line of the Japanese auto concern are based. Due to this architecture, not only a gasoline V-shaped six can be installed under the hood, but also a hybrid (gasoline-electricity) engine.
The top engine is considered a 3.5-liter 299-horsepower.It is assumed that in some countries it will be possible to purchase a crossover with an engine weaker. The volume of the hybrid installation is 2.5 m3, the capacity is 243 liters. from. Paired with such units will work 8-speed automatic gearbox Direct Shift.
The novelty for Russian buyers will be available not only in the all-wheel drive version, but also in the front-wheel drive. It is the 2WD version that will become the base, for 4WD you will have to pay extra.
Specifications
Owners of the 3.5-liter new 2018-2019 Toyota Highlander model will see the first hundred on the speedometer in 8.5 seconds. The maximum speed is electronically limited and is 180 km / h. With these characteristics, the car consumes 8.5 liters per mixed kilometers in mixed mode.
Technical specifications of other versions are currently kept secret, however, manufacturers promise that the hybrid installation will consume no more than 6.9 liters per 100 km.
Cost
The exact cost of the Toyota Highlander 2020 has not yet been announced, but, according to dealers, it starts at 2.7 million rubles. It is known for certain that the gasoline modification will be delivered in 5 trim levels (L, LE, XLE, Limited and Platinum), hybrid - in 4 trim levels (LE, XLE, Limited and Platinum).
When fans of the Japanese brand will be able to purchase a novelty in Russia it is not reported. In the United States, the start of sales of the gasoline version is scheduled for December 2019, the hybrid - in February 2020.
