The world premiere of the new Skoda Octavia, which we will see in car dealerships at the beginning of 2020, took place on 11.11.19 in Prague (Czech Republic). The enchanting performance of the updated liftback and station wagon was timed to the 60th anniversary of the release of the first car of this cult model, without exaggeration.
As much as possible examining photos of camouflage cars that passed road tests on German roads, experts predicted significant changes in the exterior and dimensions of the car. Is this so, and what will surprise the new 4th generation Octavia?
Model history
The first Octavia came off the assembly line in 1959. It was a 2-door sedan with a semi-frame design, independent suspension and 1.1 or 1.2 liter petrol power units, which could develop 40 and 45 hp. respectively.
The first model was introduced to the world market until 1964.
Following the sedan, the company introduced the station wagon with the Combi prefix on the market. Which was released until 1971.
But the first Octavia is more likely a backstory, since generations have officially considered it since the 1996 model was released.
So, the first generation of the model, introduced in 1996, was already radically different from its predecessor. It was a car created on the platform of the Volkswagen Golf, presented in two variations: liftback and station wagon. Diesel power units appeared in the engine range, and as an alternative to mechanics, an automatic gearbox, innovative at that time, appeared. The lineup also included an all-wheel drive version.
The second generation entered the market in 2004. It was a model designed on the basis of the Golf-5 model, in the motor range of which gasoline and diesel engines with power from 75 to 160 hp were presented. There were also improved RS versions, for which a 200-hp gasoline power unit was assumed or a 170-horsepower diesel engine. In 2008, the 3rd generation restyled model entered the market.
The third generation, which can be considered the predecessor of the new Skoda Octavia, which we will see in car dealerships in 2020, was introduced only 6 years ago (in 2013). The cost of the budget configuration of the Octavia Active hatchback in Russia is approximately 1,120,000 rubles, and the cost of the “charged version” itself is approaching 1,580,000 rubles.
In the near future, the new Skoda Octavia 2020 will enter the market, which, like the 3rd generation model, will be presented in station wagon and liftback bodies.
Exterior
As part of the official premiere, experts, press representatives and simply fans of Skoda cars got the opportunity to see what the Octavia model’s liftback and station wagon will be like in 2020.
In 2020 models, the following changes are obvious:
- an increase in the dimensions of the body, which should slightly push the car away from the compact Scala model;
- a return to the classic format of the head optics (apparently separate modular headlights installed on cars of the 3rd generation did not live up to expectations);
- LED headlights (in expensive trim levels);
- updated grille design;
- slightly modified front bumper;
- increased rims (maximum 19 inches, but 16 in the base);
- taillights divided into two blocks.
Liftback
Although Octavia previously belonged to spacious and large cars, the 2020 model body became even larger, adding 19 mm in length and 15 mm in width, which further brings the car closer to the prestigious European D class.
Dimensions of the 4th generation model will be:
Length | 4 689 mm |
Width | 1 829 mm |
Height | 1,476 mm |
Wheelbase | 2 686 mm |
Clearance | 156 mm |
Boot volume | 600 l |
Station wagon
In 2020, the station wagon will be released under the name Skoda Octavia Combi.
The indisputable advantage of the elongated version will be a capacious luggage compartment with a volume of 640 liters, under the policeman of which in the Russian versions they promise to place a full reserve.
It is worth noting that the exterior of the model turned out to be very stylish. Designers retained recognizable features of their beloved car, but at the same time made the station wagon body even more solid.
Interior
The interior has become one of the main surprises of the 4th generation Octavia.
Future owners will be able to appreciate not only the high quality of finishing materials, but also such technical solutions as:
- convenient steering wheel with a set of basic control keys;
- engine start button;
- new dashboard (most likely analog and digital versions will be available);
- a large enough 10-inch multimedia display (will be available for more expensive models or as an option);
- projection screen;
- contour lighting;
- ventilation and massage of the front seats;
- original arrangement of central air ducts, over which a number of main control buttons will be placed;
- multimedia center with the ability to pair with any devices using SmartLink + technology;
- 5 USB-C outputs;
- 230V socket (optional);
- Exit Warning system, warning about the need to close the door in the event of a vehicle approaching.
Specifications
The main news of 2020 will be the fact that the Skoda Octavia will not only be offered in a new body, but will also receive significantly improved technical specifications. The new 4th generation car will receive:
- a modern hybrid powerplant (but it is unlikely that such models will be presented on the Russian market);
- adaptive DCC shock absorbers with 15 levels of stiffness;
- improved security system;
- wide range of additional functions and assistants.
The new Skoda Octavia will also be available in the "for bad roads" package with an increased clearance of 15 mm.
For the rest, the model promises to preserve everything that millions of motorists value it so much:
- reliability;
- practicality;
- recognizable stylish design.
The motor range of cars designed for Russia will include the following power units:
engine's type | Volume | Power |
Petrol atmospheric | 1.6 liters | 110 h.p. |
Petrol turbocharged | 1.4 liters | 150 h.p. |
Petrol | 1.8 L | 180 h.p. |
Unfortunately, in Russian car dealerships we will not find models similar to those presented in Prague. But for buyers from Europe, the assortment will be much wider, with the possibility of choosing a diesel or gasoline power unit. Even an all-wheel drive version of the Skoda Octavia is planned.
engine's type | Volume | Power |
Petrol | 1,0 l | 110 h.p. |
Petrol | 1.5 liters | 150 h.p. |
Gasoline (for four-wheel drive) | 2.0 l | 190 h.p. |
Diesel | 2.0 l | 115 h.p. |
Diesel | 2.0 l | 150 h.p. |
Diesel | 2.0 l | 200 h.p. |
Bit fuel plant | Methane / Gasoline | 130 h.p. |
Hybrid iV | 1.4 l + electric motor | 204/245 h.p. |
Price and start of sales
The exact prices for the new Octavia cars will be announced closer to the start of sales. The first deliveries to European car dealerships are planned at the beginning of 2020, but in car dealerships in Russia, a novelty should be expected only closer to the fall.
The manufacturer promises that, despite a number of significant improvements, the lower price bar will not rise much. Those planning to purchase a 2020 Skoda Octavia in the basic configuration can focus on today's prices - approximately 1.12 million rubles for the mechanics and 1.2 million for the complete set with an automatic transmission.
