In the northern capital, the metro is the most popular urban transport, as it allows you to get to most points of the city with minimal time consumption. The metropolis continues its development, and with it the subway. According to the state planning program from 2011 to 2020, 13 new stations and 2 depots are expected to appear on the metro map of St. Petersburg. At present, some objects have already been commissioned, however, work to expand the St. Petersburg metro scheme is ongoing in 2020 and will continue further.
Development plan
The state program "Development of the transport system of St. Petersburg" includes measures to increase the length of the metro. It was approved back in 2011. By 2020, the metro lines should extend by 139.4 km, and the metro scheme will replenish with new stations. For the implementation of such a colossal project, it is planned to use 145.785 billion rubles, some of which are allocated from the federal budget.
Until 2022, the construction of new facilities, to a greater extent, is concentrated on the Frunzensko-Primorsk (violet) and Right-bank (orange) lines. In addition, construction work is underway on the new sixth Krasnoselsko-Kalinin (brown) metro line.
By 2025, the St. Petersburg metro map will significantly change its appearance:
In the future, it is planned to complete the preparatory work for the launch of the ring line (following the example of the Moscow metro map).
Currently, people who live in the suburbs and work in the center spend a huge amount of time to get to work and home. At the same time, the population of the northern capital is constantly growing. Therefore, work to expand the subway is aimed at improving transport infrastructure and connecting the central areas of the city with the outskirts.
In addition, it is difficult to get to many important historical and cultural sites by public and private transport. And during peak hours it’s easier to walk to them. In this regard, it is planned to build stations to improve accessibility to tourist places.
Frunze-Primorsky (violet) branch
The fifth metro line passes through the center of St. Petersburg and connects the northwestern part of the city with the Frunze district. At the beginning of 2019, its end stations were Komendantsky Prospekt and Mezhdunarodnaya. In the near future, the construction of the Frunze radius is expected to be completed, which has been in a state of "long-term construction" since the 80s of the last century.
New stations of this metro line of St. Petersburg were supposed to be commissioned in 2018. However, due to the influence of many factors (in particular, the lack of adequate funding), the work was not completed on time. Until 2020, it is expected to open such stations as:
- “Prospect of Glory” (south);
- "Danube" (south);
- Shushary (south);
- "Shuvalovsky Prospect" (north).
The new section of the Frunze radius will have different depths, including deep, shallow and ground. The station "Prospekt of Glory" - deep laying, "Danube" - shallow, and "Shushary" - ground. This is due to the peculiarities of the geological structure of this territory.
Another complex engineering solution is the use of a double track tunnel.It allows the construction of a tunnel of sufficient diameter to accommodate two paths simultaneously. This method can significantly reduce construction time, as well as reduce costs.
The trains on the Frunzensko-Primorskaya line are serviced by the rolling stock ТЧ-3 “Moskovskoe”, since there is no electric depot on this line. To improve the quality of the provision of transportation services and the operation of the subway, the Yuzhnoye Depot, which will become the largest electric depot in Russia, will be launched on the purple line. Its launch was planned in September 2018, but was postponed for a longer period.
Krasnoselsko-Kalinin (brown) branch
The brand new sixth line of the St. Petersburg metro. It connects the north-eastern and south-western areas of the city through the center. It will have six stations, three of which are interchange stations on red, blue and purple branches.
The main objective of this line is to connect the southwest with the central part of St. Petersburg. It should reduce the load of the passenger flow of the red line between the Prospect Veteranov station and the Pushkinskaya station.
The construction of the line began in 2013 after a long period of design, which was more than 10 years. They promised to launch all six stations by 2020. However, soon the priorities in the construction of the subway changed and attention began to be paid to other sections.
Today, the South-West - Putilovskaya segment is planned to be launched before 2022. And the entire section “South-West” - “Karetnaya” - by 2027.
In parallel, design work is underway to create the Krasnoselsky depot, which will serve this metro section. Prior to the implementation of this project, maintenance will be carried out by another depot.
Right-bank (orange) branch
It provides the movement of passengers between the center and the right bank of the Neva. In the near future, it is planned to extend it to the west at two stations: Teatralnaya and Mining Institute (Vasilievsky Island). Their commissioning is expected until 2020.
In the long-term planning, it was decided to extend the branch to the southeast to the Kudrovo station. And also, to the north-west to Lakhta, including the construction of the Marine Facade station. However, the implementation of this project has not yet begun.
At the first stage of the implementation of the Spasskaya - Mining Institute section, the construction of the Teatralnaya station structure without entrances and exits to the city is planned. A separate competition will be held to build the Teatralnaya lobby. According to preliminary data, its design will be done in gray-blue tones, and the walls will be decorated with images of silhouettes of dancers.
The Mining Institute will be the third metro station on Vasilyevsky Island. According to the architects, her lobby will be able to accommodate the largest number of passengers, compared with other vestibules of the orange branch. About 90 thousand people.
A new section of the subway should unload the Spasskaya - Sadovaya - Sennaya Square node. According to preliminary estimates, the passenger flow here should be more than 700 thousand passengers per day.
