Despite all the efforts of the country's leadership, the demographic situation remains quite difficult. The population of Russia is rapidly declining, and young people are striving for a better life, heading from small villages to megacities, attracting opportunities and higher wages.
Find out which millionaire cities, which are among the most attractive corners of Russia for living and working, will retain their status in 2020, and which settlements can be included in this list in the near future.
Moscow
According to the data of Rossat on 01.01.19 in the capital lived 12 615 279 people, which is 109 414 more than at the beginning of 2018. At the same time, the population density was about 4,880 people per square kilometer.
For many decades, Moscow has been the leader in the list of cities with population over one million people and the only metropolis of the Russian Federation with more than 10 million people. In fact, the number of residents of the capital is even greater, because in the official data not all emigrants arriving in Moscow for the purpose of training and employment, as well as tourists, are taken into account. It is worth noting that in 2018, the capital was visited by 23.5 million visitors, and in the first half of 2019 - 12 million people.
St. Petersburg
The second position in the rating of the largest megacities of Russia is St. Petersburg - the "northern capital", whose population on 01/01/19 was 5 383 890 people, which is 31 955 more than in 2018.
Although few of the residents of the city on the Neva River would call its climate comfortable, many Russians choose St. Petersburg when they move. Among the indisputable advantages of a megalopolis:
- high level of salaries;
- more job opportunities;
- developed infrastructure of industrial and sleeping areas.
Novosibirsk
As of January 1, 2019, the population of Novosibirsk was 1 618 039 man. The growth for 2018 was less significant than in Moscow and St. Petersburg, only 5,206 (0.32%).The number of residents of the metropolis is growing steadily since 2011. Despite the rather harsh climate, Novosibirsk attracts Russians and migrants from the near abroad with the prospects of high northern salaries, and young people with a wide selection of current specialties in regional universities.
Yekaterinburg
In early 2019, in the largest city of the Urals, there were 1 483 119 residents. According to statistics, the annual population growth was approximately 14,286 people.
The climate definitely cannot be called an advantage, but the inhabitants of the city are already accustomed to the vagaries of the weather and know very well where to go on vacation in order to enjoy the summer warmth. Nevertheless, Yekaterinburg is recognized as the most promising city for business development in Russia, which, combined with a large number of different universities, provides youth with the greatest opportunities for self-realization.
Nizhny Novgorod
One of the few megalopolises in Russia where Rosstat recorded a decline in the population. So, in early 2019, there lived 1 483 119 people, which is 5 502 less than on January 1, 2018.
Among the advantages of the city are the availability of housing in different price categories (from elite to budget), as well as developed infrastructure and good employment prospects for qualified specialists.Among the problems that the residents themselves state are worth noting:
- lack of parking spaces (not only in the center, but also in sleeping areas);
- insufficient number of kindergartens, which leads to long lines in kindergartens and overcrowding of classes in secondary schools.
Kazan
Almost catching up with Nizhny Novgorod in the ranking table, Kazan has 1 251 969 residents, but subject to an increase over the past year, 8,469 people.
No wonder the city bears the title of “3rd capital”, because there is everything for effective development and comfortable life:
- a large port on the banks of the Volga and the international airport;
- amazing nature and impressive architecture;
- developed infrastructure and transport links;
- universities and many enterprises ready to recruit young professionals.
Chelyabinsk
Lives here 1 200 719 people, and this means that in 2020 Chelyabinsk will be included in the list of “cities with million cities in Russia with a decreasing population”. Compared to January 2018, the number of residents in the metropolis is 1,652 less.
The reason, most likely, lies in the harsh climate and the adverse environmental situation in the region. A large number of factories provides employment opportunities, but at the same time has a negative impact on the environmental performance of the city.
Omsk
According to the Federal State Statistics Service, in January 2019, Omsk lived in 1 164 815 people, which is 7,255 less than last year.
First of all, the city will be happy for builders and oil workers. For representatives of these professions in Omsk there will always be a job with decent pay. It is not difficult to find a place here both in the service sector and in trade.
What will have to put up with for the sake of a good income? For the city, as for most industrial megacities, environmental problems are characteristic. Omsk residents have long been waiting for a solution to a number of issues of urban transport (the once promised metro was frozen at the project stage).
Samara
Following Omsk there is an outflow of residents in Samara. So, in 2018, the number of residents decreased by 6,791 and as of the beginning of 2019 amounted to 1 156 608 people
Of the undeniable advantages of a metropolis:
- Amazingly beautiful Volga nature,
- great city promenade,
- plenty of greenery and, of course, beaches;
- the opportunity to find a well-paid job.
Among the shortcomings: high rental prices and problems with infrastructure.
Rostov-on-Don
Being the largest transport hub of the Russian Federation, Rostov-on-Don counts 1 133 307 residents, which is 3,002 more than last year.
Like many cities with a million-plus population in Russia, it is steadily demonstrating population growth and in 2020 this trend should continue, because the city is really beautiful, comfortable and with a favorable picture on the labor market. This is where the production capacities of such domestic giants as:
- "Diamond";
- Rostselmash;
- Baltika-Don;
- Rostvertol.
Ufa
City population - 1 124 226 people, that, according to statistics, the nature of 2018 in the amount of 3,679 residents is quite a worthy indicator, demonstrating interest in Ufa from migrants looking for a cozy region to move to permanent residence.
The largest number of jobs here, as in other cities of Bashkiria, are in one way or another connected with servicing the oil sector. The region has developed automotive industry. But at the same time, in recent years, Ufa has been among the cities with the least financing of the public sector.
Krasnoyarsk
At the 12th position among the million-plus cities of Russia in 2020 is Krasnoyarsk, where he lives 1 095 286 residents, which is 4 475 more than in 2018.
Although the city received the status of a “millionaire” only in 2012, the number of its residents has been steadily growing recently. The gain is achieved thanks to the dynamic development of the city itself, affordable housing prices, the work of the Siberian Federal University and the opportunity to get a good job with a decent salary.
Voronezh
Due to the population growth of 6,562 people, Voronezh was able to overtake Perm in the ranking of Russia's million-plus cities by the beginning of 2019. According to statistics, at the beginning of the year there lived 1 054 111 residents.
Residents of the city themselves say that Voronezh is a city of contrasts.Salaries offered on the labor market are far from the highest, but at the same time, accommodation prices look attractive (both the cost of renting real estate and the prices in markets and in supermarkets are available). Among the highly paid vacancies, almost a quarter are in the IT sector.
Permian
After returning to itself the status of a millionaire, Perm every year shows a steady population growth. So, according to statistics, in 2018 the number of residents here increased by 2,351 and at the beginning of 2019 amounted to 1 053 934 people
Of the indisputable advantages of Perm, it is worth noting:
- a large number of parks and squares;
- the possibility of employment at the enterprises of the chemical, food, oil refining and woodworking industries, in the field of mechanical engineering and electric power industry;
- excellent transport system and developed infrastructure;
- many diverse educational institutions.
Volgograd
On January 1, 2019 in Volgograd there were 1 013 468 resident.
The city received the status of a millionaire in 2010, after which the population shows a steady downward trend. For comparison, in 2010, 1,021,215 people lived in the city.
A feature of Volgograd is its length along the Volga channel. It may take about 4 hours to drive through the entire city. But at the same time, there are very well developed transport links and infrastructure
Krasnodar
In 2020, the list of million-plus cities in Russia can be replenished with one more item, because as of 01.01.19, 918,145 people lived in Krasnodar. The city has long been a contender for a place in the list of the country's largest megacities, and if the population growth trend continues (and in 2018 the population growth amounted to 18,604 people) then in the near future it can get the status of a “millionaire” and be 16 th position ranking.
