Throughout the history of mankind, poetry has been one of the key forms of expression of thoughts and feelings. Poetry existed in all languages and cultures, worried the most hidden strings of the soul, gave answers to pressing questions. It is not surprising that a holiday arose - Poetry Day, which in 2020 will be celebrated on March 21 for the 21st time. The best way to celebrate Poetry Day is to read and listen to wonderful poems.
History of occurrence
The history of the holiday began almost 100 years ago. In the late 30s of the last century, the American poetess Tessa Suisy Webb came up with a proposal to honor poets. Ohio supported the initiative and declared October 15 as Poetry Day. The date was not chosen by chance - on this day the ancient poet and philosopher Virgil was born. At first, the holiday was celebrated in only one state. Two decades later, another 38 American states joined the poetic celebrations in Ohio, as well as the whole country - Mexico, and the holiday was called National Poetry Day.
By the end of the millennium, the holiday came to Europe. Already in 1998, the possibility of establishing a new significant date, with the filing of the Principality of Monaco, was considered at a meeting of UNESCO, and a year later the World Poetry Day was officially announced. The first celebrations took place in many capitals of the world on March 21, 1999. It is on this date that Poetry Day is celebrated. Despite the quite "solid age" of the holiday, many people do not even suspect about its existence.
Tradition of celebration
In addition to the direct “culprits” - poets, literary critics, translators, journalists, as well as all people who are not indifferent to poetic creativity participate in celebrations on the occasion of Poetry Day.
As a rule, on this day literary readings and poetry evenings are held, book novelties are presented. Television and radio broadcasts broadcast about the life and work of famous poets. And of course, on this holiday, they admit their love for poetry and directly honor the creators. Gifted authors receive well-deserved awards, they are awarded prizes. In the United States, March 21 is the presentation of the old prestigious Yale Prize Group of Young Poets.
Celebrations in Russia
The Russian language, perhaps like no other, was created for poetry. A rich vocabulary, a variety of word forms, a lot of suffixes and endings that give an emotional coloring to the word - all this contributes to a deep and beautiful presentation. And the list of brilliant Russian poets tends to infinity.
Since the debut celebration in the distant 1999, large-scale events are regularly held in Russian cities on poetry day.
- In Magnitogorsk in 2002, the World Poetry Forum was organized.
- In 2014, an original poetic event took place in St. Petersburg. For eight hours, people from the creative professions of the Northern capital, famous theater and film actors read poetry by Mikhail Lermontov. The author’s choice was not accidental; that year, the 200th anniversary of the poet’s birthday was celebrated.
- In 2017, a poetry flash mob dedicated to the work of Konstantin Balmont and dedicated to its 150th anniversary was held in Yaroslavl.
- Since 2001, Russia has a tradition of organizing multi-day poetry festivals. The international festival "Biennale of Poets" takes place in Moscow, which does not fit into the format of one day, but lasts a week or more.
Awarding ceremonies with various prizes are also timed to celebrations.Every year on March 21, laureates of the “Poet”, “Moscow Account”, and poetic “Oscar” awards receive recognition. For provincial authors, a special Moscow-Transit award has been established.

- The oldest poem appeared 44 centuries ago.
- An interesting poem-palindrome was written by the Chinese poetess Su Hui, who lived in the 4th century. It could be read in 2,848 ways.
- Dictionaries of rhymes were known in the Middle Ages.
- There is a rather rare type of phobia - metrophobia. This is a fear of poetry, the inability to understand and feel the rhymed lines.
- Muslim Quran is based on rhymed strings.
- In China, Emperor Qianlong, ruling the Middle Kingdom in the 18th century, was peculiar to poets. He sent for execution the authors of sad poems.
- Scientists at the University of Liverpool as a result of research have found that reading and reciting verses have a beneficial effect on brain activity.
- In the Netherlands, poets perform at funerals. At the burial ceremony of completely lonely people who have no one to say farewell words, poets read specially prepared verses. Their services are paid for by municipal services.
