Story
Despite the popularity of the profession in Soviet times, the holiday appeared relatively recently. On May 27, 1995, President of the Russian Federation Boris Yeltsin, by his decree, established the All-Russian Library Day. The idea belonged to the head of the Russian National Library named V.N. Zaitseva. Thanks to him, the domestic library was added to the “World Digital Library”. Thanks to this, MFN has changed for the better. New buildings and book depositories were opened, racks began to be updated, computer equipment appeared and new editions of popular book series were added. May 27 is not a randomly selected date in the calendar. On this day in 1795, by decree of Catherine II, the Imperial Public Library was established and its construction began, which gave rise to the library fund of the Russian Federation.
At the beginning of the 18th century, there was active discussion about the need to create a book repository accessible to citizens of the Empire. It was supposed to be a place for representatives of all classes who want to acquire new knowledge or simply diversify leisure. However, to bring the idea to life, huge funding was required. Almost a hundred years passed before the project was approved. The imperial library included a collection of the first library of the Commonwealth, with more than 400 thousand volumes. This huge collection was a trophy, because at the beginning of the XX century it was returned to the Poles.
In 1810, Alexander I signed an important decree. Each printed publication that was issued on the territory of the Empire was to be added to the library. It was not only about scientific works or novels, but even about pulp fiction and newspapers. In 1814, he personally opened the library, after which the Russian library fund became one of the largest in the world.
