BMW is preparing to launch a new 4-series cabriolet in the series and we propose to slightly open the veil of mystery and discuss what the new generation of the popular coupe will be like by evaluating the first photos, as well as what the technical specifications and price of the 2020 production model may be.
Model history
The BMW 4 Series compact luxury cars were first introduced in 2013. These were visually similar to the 3rd series of coupes and convertibles, with spectacular design solutions, excellent technical specifications and legendary Bavarian quality.
In 2014, in addition to the two previously presented models, the sports version of the BMW M4 was released to the market, which received an electric power steering and a powerful turbocharger.
At the end of 2018 - the beginning of 2019, statements were increasingly heard that BMW was preparing to release a new generation of the popular BMW 4-series, but most likely the car would be presented in late 2019 or early 2020.
BMW 4-series concept
The Bavarians presented the concept of the new Quartet at the Frankfurt Motor Show, which started on September 12, 2019. Although the technical specifications of the new BMW model are still unknown, the car's design has exceeded all expectations.
The exterior of the BMW 4-series, which they promise to launch in the series in the first half of 2020, is completely unlike its predecessors. Attention is drawn to:
- significantly elongated hood;
- large grille with chrome trim;
- narrow LED headlights;
- sophisticated design of the front bumper, providing excellent aerodynamics at high speeds;
- impressive black air intakes;
- new door trim and a final line of glass;
- laconic rear bumper with a pair of trapezoidal tips of the exhaust system, hinting that under the hood of the new items we will see a fairly powerful power unit.
Experts and fans of the BMW brand believe that the larger grille, large air intakes and features of the exhaust system of the prototype presented indicate that the new “four” of 2020 will receive a traditional gasoline engine, or hybrid installation.
Nevertheless, most likely, in 2020, the BMW 4-series will not become fully electric, despite the rapid development of technology and the emerging trend of transition to electric models in many European automakers.
Serial model
Of course, the production car, which will go to car dealerships in 2020, will differ significantly from the presented concept. This is obvious, because the first photos of the real live “four” from road tests appeared on the network.
What will remain in the production model, and what will remain only the conceptual idea of BMW engineers?
Exterior
Traditionally, the Bavarians diligently hide everything related to the features of the new model before the official premiere. But, the first photos of two camouflaged BMW 4 coupe bodies that pass tests in the snowy expanses of Sweden still allow us to evaluate the main changes that will occur with the car body.
So, from the obvious changes, experts note:
- a change in the design of the grille, which will become a little narrower;
- replacement head optics (most likely the headlights will acquire a new geometry);
- the convertible will receive a soft folding roof.
Interior
So far, photographers have not been able to capture the interior of the BMW 4 series, but it is quite possible that the 2020 model interior will have references to the already presented “troika”, although the TOP version of the sports coupe will most likely receive the most advanced options, such as:
- digital dashboard;
- projection display;
- touch monitor to control the navigation and functions of the multimedia system;
- modern gear selector and other controls on the central tunnel;
- background illumination of the cabin, etc.
Specifications
The two cars spotted by photographers in Sweden have some differences in the rear bumper area. What can be accurately assessed is the different tips of the exhaust system, which clearly indicates that the cars are equipped with power units of different power. Most likely, the manufacturer is testing two options: basic and TOP configuration, although experts do not exclude the possibility of testing a new exhaust system.
So far, no information has been received about the new power units for the Quartet, and it would be quite expected that the new coupe and convertible can be equipped with a standard line of engines that are familiar with the 3 Series and Z4 models. It is also unknown whether the company plans to produce hybrids based on the Quartet.

It is well known that the new BMW 4, which goes on sale in early 2020, will be based on the CLAR platform, which will significantly reduce the weight of the car and provide opportunities for its further modernization.
Price and start of sales
It will be too early to say what the price of the new generation of the serial BMW 4 2020 production will be, because there is no complete information about what technical characteristics, innovative technologies and options the model will receive.
The presentation of the prototype has already taken place at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 12, 2019, and they plan to show the updated serial convertible at the beginning of 2020.
The price of the BMW 4 series presented today at car dealerships starts at 2,730,000 rubles. TOP equipment costs around 3,640,000 rubles. Of course, if you accelerate and equip a brand new convertible to the maximum. that its price may exceed the mark of 5 million rubles.
