One of the most striking innovations of the Frankfurt Motor Show, which started on September 10, 2019, was the new Land Rover Defender, which should go on sale in the first half of 2020. The model can be called truly revolutionary, because it will radically differ from the car that the company has been supplying to the market for many decades, which is well-known to connoisseurs.
Model history
A large, powerful, reliable and slightly angular SUV, which later became the legendary Defender, Land Rover first introduced in the UK back in 1983.
Among the undeniable advantages of the model were:
- a wide range of powerful gasoline and diesel engines;
- permanent four-wheel drive with locking center differential;
- reliable frame construction.
Until 2014, various modifications of the Defender were officially sold in Russia, including pickups, and in 2016 the release of the model was officially completed. But the interest of true off-road lovers in powerful and reliable cars has not faded. The limited version of the model with the prefix Works, released in 2018 on the occasion of its 70th anniversary, was sold up record-breaking quickly, which prompted the company's leadership to modify the beloved SUV by everyone.
Over the past year, the network had a lot of ideas and guesses about what the new 2nd generation Land Rover Defender could be, which they planned to bring to the market in 2020. But, the creators finally declassified their brainchild only in September 2019, introducing the new product at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2019 (IAA).
And they concealed the new Defender of 2020 in vain, because even with a cursory glance at the first live photos of the new product, it is obvious that there are incredible changes.
Exterior
Externally, the new generation of the legendary all-terrain vehicle is radically different from its predecessor model. Instead of angular shapes - smoothly rounded body elements, instead of laconic simplicity - a spectacular premium design.
The famous designer Massimo Fracella worked on the new exterior, who was given the task to rethink the exterior of the iconic car and make it more modern, while preserving the recognizable features of the beloved Defender. How well the master succeeded, time will tell. Definitely, the opinions of experts and motorists on this issue differ.
So, the exterior, which attracted the attention of the new Land Rover Defender 2020, is formed by such elements as:
- radically changed frontal part;
- round-shaped headlights with LED contour lighting;
- powerful front bumper;
- off-road kit of unpainted plastic;
- reliable protection of the bottom;
- vertical air intakes in the wings;
- large wheels (18-22 inches);
- reliable additional roof rack with a forester for the most convenient loading;
- a large tailgate, on which a spare tire is traditionally located;
- spectacular taillights in a cubic design;
- fabric sliding roof (optional).
The new Land Rover Defender will hit the market in 2020 in 3-door and 5-door versions (respectively, and the price will be slightly different). For the two versions, the usual notation (90/110) will be preserved.

The standard Defender 2020, presented in the photo, will be available with 2 or 3 rows of seats. The second row (in both the short and standard versions) has a 40:20:40 separation, which allows you to quickly transform the interior if necessary, getting a flat surface.
The color scheme of the model is expanded by three exclusive shades: Tasman Blue, Gondwana Stone and Pangea Green. In shades of Indus Silver, Gondwana Stone and Pangea Green, a protective whip is also provided, which extends the life of the paintwork when operating the car on the road.
Interior
Salon new items will fully meet the wishes of the most demanding owner. High-quality materials, maximum functionality and ergonomics of the space will allow to overcome any off-road in an atmosphere of maximum comfort.
For the convenience of the driver and passengers, there is everything you need and much more:
- digital dashboard;
- innovative gear selector;
- Pivi Pro 10-inch touchscreen multimedia display
- powerful acoustics of 180 W;
- modern navigation system;
- multifunction steering wheel with large convenient buttons;
- comfortable seats with a large number of possible adjustments;
- large mirrors with heating, electric and collapse function in the parking lot;
- all-round cameras.
As additional options will be available:
- leather upholstery;
- projection display;
- fabric or panoramic roof;
- electric drive and ventilation of seats;
- Acoustics Meridian with a power of 400 or 700 watts;
- ClearSight Ground View technology (transparent hood).
The highlight of the interior of the new Defender will be the layout of the front row of seats. If necessary, the setting between the driver and passenger seats can be transformed into another additional place. Thus, the first row of the SUV can be considered triple. The third row of seats is designed for two passengers.
Specifications
The new Land Rover Defender looks really impressive, but the latest news suggests that its main features are not at all in the design, but in the fact that the 2020 model received:
- new D7x platform;
- bearing body;
- rigid power frame withstanding a load of 6.5 tons;
- independent air suspension.
Off-road qualities of the model will also be quite high, as indicated by such parameters as:

The car is also capable of overcoming water obstacles up to 900 mm deep.
The engine range of the new Defender is also quite diverse and includes gasoline, diesel and hybrid powertrains.

For all modifications, an 8-speed automatic transmission ZF and an all-wheel drive system with an active rear differential and a two-speed transfer are designed (an electronic lock is optionally possible).
The special electronic system Terrain Response 2 also allows you to set a special mode for overcoming water obstacles (Wade).
It is also new to get modern cruise control, a system for tracking cross-traffic when reversing, as well as an automatic parking assistant.
Price and start of sales
In the spring of 2020, the first to enter the UK market is the Land Rover Defender 110, whose price in the homeland ranges from 45,240 to 78,800 pounds, which is equivalent to 3.6 - 6.4 million rubles.
The base price tag Defender 90, which will appear in dealerships following the standard version, will start at 40,000 pounds.
Towards the end of 2020, the release of an extended version of the 130th Defender is also expected, which is likely to surpass previous models in pricing, but we will talk about it later when more information from the manufacturer appears.
