Palace Square in the New Year 2020 will become the center of festivities in St. Petersburg. By tradition, it is here that the main Christmas tree of the city is installed and lit. The organizers of the New Year festivities are trying to surprise St. Petersburgers and guests of the northern capital, coming up with colorful shows and unusual surprises. It is not surprising that on the eve of the New Year on Palace Square it is crowded - as they say, the apple has nowhere to fall.
Start
Officially, festivities open the week before the New Year - December 22-23. They begin with the meeting of Santa Claus, arriving in St. Petersburg from his residence. In 2019, he appeared on the stage of Palace Square in a balloon. This time, the organizers will come up with something else original.
They will start seeing off the old and celebrating the New Year 2020 at the Palace, as usual, at 20 o’clock - this has already become a tradition. By this time, people are gathering here, taking places closer to the stage.
In an hour, Nevsky Prospect and the square will turn into a pedestrian zone - traffic for cars and public transport will be closed. You will have to get to the place of mass festivities by car in advance or use the metro - from December 31 to January 1, it works all night.
The atmosphere of a fairy tale
The main tree of St. Petersburg annually pleases with stylish illumination, an abundance of light effects. Against the background of the New Year’s symbol and decorations, you can take a picture for memory.
The atmosphere of magic, fairy tales to the townspeople and tourists is created by Santa Claus and the Snow Maiden, the heroes of favorite fairy tales. All of them are willingly photographed with children and adults.
Every year the Organizing Committee thinks over how to celebrate the holiday so that the script is equally interesting for young people, adults and elderly people, so that children do not get bored on New Year's Eve. This is not the first year that the concept of festive events has been built on the combination of Russian color and national traditions with modern technical aspects (illumination, light and laser shows, and other special effects).
Celebration program
The organizing committee does not disclose everything that will happen on Palace Square, but there are mandatory events that repeat from year to year:
- first-person congratulations;
- concert and disco;
- light performance;
- fireworks.
The main events unfold on the stage - last year it was in the form of an ice castle. Popular and pop groups perform here, congratulations are sounded, team competitions are held with the participation of those gathered. Another tradition is light installations, they are projected onto the General Staff building every 30 minutes to mixes of dynamic and well-known songs. Next to the stage, screens for a video bridge with other cities of Russia are being installed. The event "Country Congratulates" is held in an open format. This means that anyone present can congratulate compatriots on the holiday through video communication.
Concert
Two hours before the New Year, the first persons of St. Petersburg take the stage to congratulate people on the holiday. After that, a gala concert begins. It involves dancers, circus artists, vocalists, creative groups and pop stars. The main part with a disco, songs and contests continues until 3 am on January 1. After that, high-profile shows end, but the very racks continue to have fun, participating in competitions and other events.
Salute
What New Year without fireworks? The sky above Palace Square and the surrounding area is lit every year by a fireworks display - a colorful extravaganza begins at midnight or 3 o’clock in the morning. The exact time will be known 7-10 days before the celebration. Salute is a large-scale sight, it lasts about 10 minutes. The festive fireworks are launched from 35 sites at the same time - the lights are painted in bright colors of the Neva. Multi-colored placers can be seen from many areas of St. Petersburg, but in the center - the best.
Where to eat
Not far from the main Christmas tree will be a fair town - it will open on the eve of New Year's events. Manufacturers from various regions of Russia will present their products in the trade pavilions. Souvenirs, dishes, wood products, felt boots and other products in the Russian style at the fair are presented in abundance. Here, lively sellers offer treats for every taste: pancakes with different fillings, hot tea, meat pies, mulled wine, coffee and many other dishes.
Security measures
On New Year's Eve in St. Petersburg, unprecedented security measures are being taken. To get to the Palace Square, bypassing the electromagnetic framework, will not work. Police officers patrolling the city center also have hand-held metal detectors. It is advisable for those present at the celebrations to have an identification document with them - law enforcement officers have the right to verify it if the person’s actions seem suspicious. Policemen must deliver persons without documents to the nearest police department to establish their identity.
It is forbidden to bring and drink alcohol - violators face administrative liability.
All of the above is done for the safety of people gathered for the holiday, and the prevention of terrorist threats.
New Year's weather in St. Petersburg
Rains and wind reign in North Palmyra - this must be taken into account when choosing clothes for night events. Even if the temperature is at the end of December, the temperature will be cold and uncomfortable due to strong winds and frost. Beautiful hairstyle, elegant evening outfit and light shoes - clothes are not for outdoor walks. A waterproof down jacket, hat and scarf, warm pants and warm shoes are a more practical option that will not freeze and will not spoil the next winter holidays with a cold. As the residents of the city on the Neva say, there is no bad weather in it - there are inappropriate clothes.
The lack of snow will not spoil the holiday - many simply will not notice it behind the luminous fountains, shop windows decorated with garlands, thousands of illumination lights and other shining installations, which Palace Square and its surroundings so generously greet guests.
